Ok I am pretty much ready to say screw it on my quest to find the best under $400 player with an HDMI or DVI output and either SACD or DVD-A support, it seems every one I go to look at has flaws. I would rather just wait for HD-DVD or whatever, but I need something to replace my cheap Sony that is not even progressive scan. I really like the Onkyo 802, it is universal, a 6 disc changer, has solid build quality and I can get it for $350 shipped from JR.com. It would probably become a dedicated audio player once a good HDMI player or HD-DVD comes out. Does anyone here own this player or have any experience with it? Hopefully it does not have any major flaws because I am looking to pick it up soon. I was also looking at the Yamaha 750 as well.

The Onkyo 802 is a good audio unit. It's not that great for video at all. I wouldn't buy it for that if I were you.

On paper, and based on some feedback around here for starters, it's looking like the Yamaha 750 is the better of these two units. Seen some pretty good feedback on that. If you do a search, I think there was even a Yamaha 750 thread a couple of weeks ago...

www.hometheaterhifi.com If you look up the Onkyo 802 in the Secrets shootout, you'll see that it performed abysmally on their video tests.

Yeah I checked out the secrets review and also did some searches it appears the the video is very bad but the audio is good. I looks like I am going to have to pass on this player, and give the 750 a more serious look.

Keep in mind: The Yamaha isn't going to be much better for video. Don't get your hopes up too much. On paper, it's a tad better for video DACs. That's it.

Be ye aware. ;)
