On the other hand, we can expand the topic to Locations.
Has anyone here ever gone to the West Coast of Ireland?
Or, even, to the locale of that alternate beach?
It's on my Bucket List, for sure.
I live on the west coast of Ireland just a few miles from the actual locations.
I've been to the beach many times.
It's magical.

Hard to top that one.
Oh, and did I say "J-E-A-L-O-U-S", too?;)

The village and the army barracks no longer exist. The schoolhouse is still there but is in a very delapidated condition.
The shots of Rosie on the cliff at the start of the film are about 150 miles away from the beach.
Sarah Miles was in the Dingle area about a month ago.

Was Sarah Miles visit to Dingle known in advance to the public?
If so, then J-E-A-L-O-U-S doesn't even begin to cover it.
If ever I get there, I would cover the 150 mile span, ever so gladly.
I can't believe the village is gone.
I was of the understanding that it was to stay and remain.
One would also think that something of a more intimate setting, such as the schoolhouse, would have been taken care of.

Sarah Miles was filming a documentary.
I have a friend who worked on the sound
The village was dismantled after filming because it was built on land that was
owned by two different people and even
though David Lean offered to make the village a permanent structure the landowners couldn't agree on it.
The schoolhouse was built as a regular
building and finished to a very high standard with working fireplaces and
a lot of authentic detail in the decor etc.
I went to school in one just like it.
I was in the schoolhouse two years ago.
I guess the owners lost interest in upkeeping it over the years.

"Sarah Miles was filming a documentary"?
Hmmm-m-m-m-m-m-m.
Sounds like something appropo and supplemental, to go along with an updated BD release, right?;)
[...]
Wish I had the money to buy up that schoolhouse and property; or, at least, spend the money on its upkeep.

I was speaking with my friend and he said the documentary was for the BBC. He said it's possible that it could also be intended for use in a future Blu-Ray but that is speculation at the moment.
If he gives me any more information about it in the future I'll let you know.

Speculations aside, I am encouraged.
The sheer fact that a BBC documentary was even made some 45 years after the initial release of "Ryan's Daughter" proves that there's an active support out there for this film; as raised monies were required to get that project off the ground. Having Sarah Miles in this documentary speaks volumes, as well.
I am further encouraged, because the renewed interests in "Ryan's Daughter" clearly reveals that this film has - internationally - an active and contemporary following, no longer exclusive to our esteemed HTF membership.
No doubt, "Ryan's Daughter" remains very much alive and very much successful.
The net has gotten wider and from these shores we can now see displays of greater swells upon the horizon. :thumbs-up-smiley:
Go get 'em Rosie.:)

Speculations aside, I am encouraged. Monies were successfully raised for this such said documentary to even occur. Sarah Miles agreed to be a part of it. And the BBC, no less, is also behind it. I am encouraged, because the interests in "Ryan's Daughter" are clearly now revealed as being something not just limited to our own interests within the HTF membership. The net has gotten wider, gone international and the shores are now displaying greater swells upon the horizon. Go get 'em Rosie.:)
There's another documentary made by RTE ( the Irish national tv broadcaster )
entitled A BIT OF A FILLUM ( this is the correct spelling ) Lots of interviews with local people from the area who were involved with the filming including the girl who played the schoolgirl CATHY and Robert Mitchum's landlady and his driver. They tell some very entertaining stories. This should be sought by WB for inclusion on a BD. I recorded it from tv a few years ago. It's wonderful.

"A bit of a Fillum" would have been a great title for this entire thread;
except I would spell it as Phil-um.

At this point, anything from me will be full of Phil-um Filler.
Or, at least, until the tide comes in.

Is anyone able to clarify the source or transfer we're seeing when watching "Ryan's Daughter" on an "HD" Pay-Per-View broadcast?

Have you ever witnessed any of the coastal storms within those regions and/or locations?
I could only imagine it to be something powerful.

Yes I have. In Ireland we get a lot of wet stormy weather during winter. It can be amazing at times.

Dr. Griffin has an HTF thread entitled "List of 70mm films on Blu Ray 1926-Present".
Among the discussions, one will find a breakdown of 70mm FOX titles that received 2,4 and 8K scans, as submitted by OliverK in Post # 182
In and of itself, both Dr. Griffin's initial list and the comprehensive list of FOX scans; as supplied by OliverK; are highly informative and well worth reviewing.
Being that "Ryan's Daughter" is a 70mm fare, I was wondering if there is any known information as to what level of Scan this title has warranted.

NOTE:
This is a technical question only.
We have been advised by RAH to not disturb WAC (see Post #277-79).
Please respect.:thumbs-up-smiley:

Ryan is most like an HD scan from a 35 IP.
