Looking for a thriller to screen - Hitchcock would be a good bet.
Something cerebral - possibly Wyler, Mankiewicz
Westerns - Ford, Hawks
And for a modern production with an accent on sports, Ron Shelton isn't a bad way to go.
I'd not seen his 1996 Tin Cup since it appeared theatrically, but ended up watching it - in its entirety - via Warner Archive's beautiful new Blu-ray.
It's a bit on the long side, at 135 minutes, but the payoff is worth it. Great characters - Kevin Costner, Rene Russo, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson - going the distance, and with an ending that works perfectly for their mindset.
Could I lose ten minutes from the first hour? Easily.
But no big deal.
And you don't have to be a golfer to get it.
