I am interested in purchasing a sub-woofer and Sony has a 50 watt one for 150 CDN. I have no need for anything loud. I play my DVD's at a soft volume. Is 50 Watt enough for my small needs?

A watt rating is just about meaningless when it comes to a subs performance. There are several other things that need to be known.

But in that price range there is the Sony WM40 (supposed to be findable for under $200 online), the Parts Express DLS 10" ($100) and I'm sure a few other poeple will mention a couple other options better than a 50W Sony.
