Actually, Lord of the Rings would probably not be a good candidate for large format.

The most important element of any modern effects film is the ability to blend CGI / digital work which has been created at 2k (actually 1.8). Any large format system would show the low resolution of the digital work.

DeeF,

I was actually speaking of projected film and not DVD transfers. Living in Los Angeles I have the luxiuary of seeing some of the best 70MM/65MM print screenings of 1950-1970 films. They look incredible, no films shot today compare. As for DVD transfers, most films made today should look better since the color etc hasn't faded, and the transfer is usually mmade before the film is released to theaters. And most current films will look better than films of 40 years ago. But a good 70MM projected print will blow away anything made today.
