As always, great to hear from RAH about a new release. Sad to hear about the quality on this one though. This has me terrified for what could happen to the Minghella releases (Cold Mtn and English Patient specifically) should they make it to Blu in the near future, but in fairness I don't...
Is the "Cult Fiction" release of The Long Good Friday the same as the other Anchor Bay release? I'm referring to this one here... Amazon.com: Cult Fiction: The Long Good Friday: Bruce Alexander,Pierce Brosnan,Michael Byrne,George Coulouris,Eddie Constantine,Charles Cork,Stephen Davies,Alan...
Over at criterionforum (this thread: :: View topic - 422 The Last Emperor ), someone linked these, so for those interested in reading about Storaro's "theories" here they are... Interview: Filmmaker Magazine: Web Exclusives His "Univisium" proposal...
Sorry to get your hopes up Bob with the thread resurrection. Hopefully Paramount gets its act together on this film (and countless others) - I guess they don't feel there is enough financial incentive to get a lot of these films out on DVD (let alone high def). Just picked up the current DVD...
Just watched this film today for the first time and had to do the requisite "any news yet?" thread resurrection...Any movement at Paramount? I'm at least looking forward to watching all the O'Hara special features on the current "special edition" dvd. Transfer was pretty bad, but I was at...
Nice, just saw this tonight at the theater and thought it was great. Has it been mentioned whether or not the HD-DVD version will be identical in content to this 3 disc DVD?
Also looks like that Scorsese documentary is being packed in to a new collection. http://www.amazon.com/Val-Lewton-Col...1908497&sr=8-9 Any idea if there's gonna be any changes made other than the addition of the documentary? (Saw both the docu and new collection on the DVDBeaver main page)
Do you think The Sopranos will find a complete series release in HD/BD sometime soon, or will we have to wait for each season release - 1, 2, etc.? Has HBO/Warner made any indication to their plans? I would imagine if they make a SD boxset for the entire series, a high def version release...
Very nice! It'd be nice to get some clarity on the release dates, etc. In due time, I suppose. How many do you think will actually be released Q4? The Dark Knight will be a long way off, for example...
Question for the neutral owners out there. How do you make a decision on all the Warners releases? A curious inquiry from a poor decision maker... I'm thinking I'll go neutral as well like Dave, but I'm sort of curious how you guys make decisions on the neutral releases (assuming all...
Anyone have experience with an optical switch like this? http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Optica...8890461&sr=8-1 It doesn't look like it's got the best build quality...Alternatively, there is a full blown A/V selector, but it's 45 bucks, and adds further bulk to an already crowded home...
I did a screen cap of the best example I could get of the artifacting (if that's what it can really be called). Taking a pic of a tube tv is not the most ideal; however if you sit back from your screen, I believe you can see the problem much better - it's on Scar's cheek and neck...
I'm experiencing some blocky artifacting when watching Blu-ray discs and DVDs on my PS3. My TV is a Zenith C32V37. I am hooked up to the DVI input on the TV via a Monoprice HDMI-DVI cable. I'm viewing at 1080i (other resolutions don't seem to get rid of the problem, and DVDs do it whether...
I'm curious if it's possible to discern between all the various audio codecs and output formats (DD+,TrueHD,PCM,DTS core,DTS-HD master, etc) on a $300-$400 home theater in a box system. I think I have a pretty good ear, but I'm wondering if objectively speaking there's no way I'd be able to tell...
I have a question regarding 1080i being deinterlaced by most tv's. Does anyone know if this is the case on computer monitors? I am wondering if I were to hook up an HD-A2 to a PC monitor through HDMI or DVI (BenQ 24" lcd as an example) would the monitor deinterlace the image or would there be...
How exactly does the 24p conversion work? What are you guys sourcing from - DVD/VHS? (And for that matter what are you watching it on?) Sounds pretty daunting, but I'm intrigued. Is Sony Vegas the primary program used or are there others. Maybe even pointing me in the right direction to...
Anyone think we'll see a nicer transfer? DVDBeaver mentions that the Kino is pretty good, albeit interlaced. I might just go for this one, but does anyone see the possibility of a better release anytime? I posted on the noir thread but figured this DVD might be worth discussion since this thread...
Is there any possibility we'll ever see a nice progressive transfer of Scarlet Street on DVD? I'm probably gonna pick up the Kino DVD anyway, but just wondering...
Was curious about this film and figured I'd tack my question onto this old thread rather than start a new one...Have there been any updates from Warner Bros. regarding this film? It's playing on TCM this coming Sunday, but I'm wondering what ever happened with a DVD release.
I didn't really know about different choices for restoration, although I imagined there were many ways to go about restoring a film - nice to learn something new...As for photochemical restoration, would that be the sort of restoration that was done by RAH and Katz on Vertigo versus the digital...
I assume you are deciding between the 2 disc and the recent 1 disc release version, which is identical except for the lack of an extras disc. I will plug DVD Beaver, which seems to say positive things about the extras, as is echoed in the other replies here...
They don't have any R1 grabs for a direct compare, but looking at the other caps (http://www.hitchcockwiki.com/hitchco...Image:5007.gif), the PAL transfer does look pretty good except for the lack of grain, but we're talking in comparison with the R1, which obviously shares the same fate...
I think that actually means on Disc 2 there will be "3 Complete Film Versions." Best to wait for an official announcement I think.
This is looking pretty good, regardless of whether or not the packaging is AU-only, content is looking great. Really excited.
Well, thanks again to Gary Tooze, we can see screen comparisons of the new release.
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDRev...atchathief.htm
New picture does look vastly better from those grabs, but it looks like there's a lot less grain (which may be more appropriate as the original had a...
Well Jonathan beat me to posting the DVDBeaver comparison (great site if you’re looking for comparisons). The Image does seem to have the better quality. I recently watched the Geneon cause that's what Netflix stocks, which is unfortunate. I abhor PAL speed-up, and for some reason the Geneon...
Hey all, was curious about dvd playback performance on PC's. Which hardware components have the greatest influence on playback, specifically when using zplayer (or MPC) + ffdshow. I sometimes have issues with video playback that is not entirely smooth like say WinDVD is (but of course WinDVD...
