    Istanbul Electronics Store

I can report that Istanbul is NOT a good place to look for electronics. I had expected it would be a smaller Dubai, but the choices are really limited and prices very high. There was a four-story indoor electronics market between Sultanahmet and Eminonu, but the prices were still very high. Steve

Thanks, Ed. That's good to know so that I don't waste my time looking for them . Anyone else have ideas about high-end electronics stores in Istanbul?

    Istanbul Electronics Store

I suppose this is a long shot, but I'm traveling to Istanbul (from Kazakstan) and would like to buy a DVD player (perhaps an Oppo). Can anyone suggest a good electronics store to visit? Thanks Steve

Help on buying medium-quality DVD player

Well, I bought the Panasonic S97, but then it turns out that it cannot be made region-free, although the store assured me that it could. So I returned it. This weekend I'll be looking around the city to see what else there is. I'll let you all know what I find. Steve

Need a good RegionFree/PAL to NTSC player...

Usually "multi-zoning" is included in the price. If you bring in a player that you didn't buy from the store, it costs 10-25 USD. Steve

Need a good RegionFree/PAL to NTSC player...

In Kazakstan, the store will usually "multi-zone" any DVD player you buy by popping a magic disc in. Don't know if that is possible where you're friend lives--I would suppose that things are not quite so advanced in the States. Steve

Help on buying medium-quality DVD player

I could probably find HD-DVD players here in Kazakstan, given all the oil money flowing into the country, but they would be very expensive. Plus I'm a bit skeptical if HD-DVD will really take off--I hope I'm wrong, but I don't want to sink money into it yet. I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy...

Help on buying medium-quality DVD player

Jeremy, thanks for the good links. The AVS discussion of the Denon 1920 was especially helpful. I noticed that Panasonic S97 only has 720p and 1080i out of the HDMI connection. Could it be a problem to have to do HDMI to get 720p, which is my desired output? My projector has a 720p in, but...

Help on buying medium-quality DVD player

Alon, Thanks for the recommendation. I see the Denon does SACD, and the Panasonic does not, but what else about it justifies the extra cost? Steve

Help on buying medium-quality DVD player

I'm looking to upgrade my DVD player. My budget is 400 USD or less. I'm in Kazakstan, so my choices are somewhat limited, but I've found a Panasonic DVD-S97. I'm also considering Onkyo DV-L55 or Harman/Kardon DVD-21. My current setup is Receiver - Harman/Kardon AVR 3550 Projector -...

    Calibration disc for PAL

Thanks for your advice. I've decided to buy both now. The PAL was harder to find than the NTSC while I'm in the States, but I found it at Overstock.com for a very good price.

    Calibration disc for PAL

Does anyone know if the calibration discs for video have both PAL and NTSC on them? Am I correct in assuming that a TV calibrated for one format would not be calibrated for the other? Can you calibrate for both and save the settings as different user profiles or something similar? I watch...

New to HT ideas on speakers

I have a room that is a little bigger than yours and a similar JBL setup, and I am very happy with it. I've got E60 mains, EC25 center, E10 surrounds, and an E250 sub, so most of mine are one step down, except for the sub. My system definitely provides enough volume for the room. But the most...

Are Regional DVDs more expensive than American DVDs?

I've never used Play.com but they do claim on their web site to deliver to the US and that S&H is free. Steve

    Russian Movies

Alexey, You've got a nice site with tons of information on Russian films! I studied Russian in university for six years, so I've seen some Russian movies, but they were mostly SERIOUS art films that I was forced to watch because my professors loved them. I have really enjoyed the Russian...

    Cheap High Quality Music Labels

Does anyone have suggestions about high quality CD labels for classical or jazz music that are bargain priced? I've been buying Philips or Telarc CDs most of the time, but I'd like recommendations on good quality labels that give a little more bang for the buck. Also, when you look at a...

JBL Northridge E60 vs. Yamaha NS 515

I'm a rookie putting together an HT system (50% HT, 50% music). Having good bass is very important to me. I live in Kazakstan, so the selection is not great. I've looked at the following systems and wondered if I could get feedback on my choice: 1. JBL Northridge E60 fronts, EC25 center...

    Radiotechnika speakers

I'm getting my first HT system, and I'm putting it together myself. I live in Kazakstan, so the choices are somewhat limited. I have, however, found an interesting local brand of speakers made in Latvia called Radiotechnika. I'm thinking of buying their X-Line, which is intended for export...
