    Test Sub

I'd like to build a small, reasonably light and reasonably portable sub that I could use to test various environments for low frequency response and appropriate sub location and acoustic treatment. Ideally, I'd like flat output down to around 10~15Hz at a reasonable level, say 75~80dB. I'm...

    DIY amplifiers

Any suggestions on kit or completely DIY SS amplifiers that offer not only good performance (power, distortion, frequency response, SNR, etc.) but also are a great value? This would be something I would build a large quantity of to use in combination with custom active monitors that are actively...

Question for the line array guys

Really have no idea why this thought came up... probably because it's late and my brain is beginning to short circuit. Anyway, I understand the physical basis of comb filtering. I also understand that for line arrays there typically seems to be a concerted effort to keep the center to center...

    Any ETF experts here?

I have an odd problem with setting up ETF with my hardware. I've posted the problem at AVS and AA forums... if there is anyone here that really knows their ETF stuff that hasn't/won't see the post at the other foums, speak up and I'll describe what's going on.

    Disappointment with BFD setup

:frowning: Got the shiny new BFD, hooked it into the system, burned some test tones to CD for an initial rough setup and get used to how the BFD works, broke out the RatShack SPL meter, again for rough setup and experimentation, set initial approximate input/output gains, popped in the test...

    Relay clicking in Rotel amp

One of the Rotel amplifiers I recently purchased (a 991) seems to suffering from an overactive relay. This amplifier has a turn on delay relay to prevent turn on thump. There is a characteristic click when that relay (opens, closes ?) activates ~5 seconds after the amp is powered on. I'm...

    How to measure an inductor?

Is there a way to measure an inductor accurately? My multimeter doesn't have any way to do this that I can see. I know I've seen some that have ways to measure capacitance (I think), but I'm not sure if they do inductance or not. Any thoughts? There aren't any markings at all to go by.

    I have a disease

It isn't quite upgraditis, since I'm not actually replacing components... just adding more and more. I'm not sure just what to call it. I bought my 8th Rotel amplifier today. I only need a few more now for the subs. :frowning: I'm sick. Please help... donations can be sent to.. :)

Rod Elliot's 300W sub amp design

Have any of you ever built a sub amp following Rod Elliot's design? If so, how do you rate its performance? Also, assuming the PCB was purchased from Rod's site, what would you estimate the total cost to complete one would be (including all components, heatsinks, etc.)? And for the final...

    Crown XLX amps?

oops, that should have read XLS :b added Crest Audio options Does anyone have any experience with the new Crown XLS series amps (the new 2U chassis)? Like many people, I suppose, I've been scouring the web looking at different options for bass amplification. I ran across these, and they...

Need help from electrical gurus... summing line level signals

I'm sure the circuit must be rather simple, but I've never seen the layout for one, nor have I read any discussions on what the "best" way to do it is (if there are in fact more than one). Of course I'm talking about summing two channels of information into one, so that you don't get...

Umm... so, help me figure out the best amplifier setup, and stuff

I can't seem to come to any resolution by myself, so I would appreciate input from you guys on the pros and cons of each alternative. I need an amp(s) to power my planned subwoofer setup. This will be an infinite baffle design, with 4 AV15's per side. I'd like to keep it stereo, so that...

Dipole design using the DPL 12

Just curious here, wanting to make sure I don't neglect any valid options. I'm looking for a speaker/enclosure design that can cover the range from ~60Hz to ~180Hz. Simple to ask hard to answer question: what would the usable frequency range of a DPL 12 be? I'm having difficulty figuring out...

    Questions about Crown K1/K2 amplifiers.

    (1) Are the rack handles removable? (2) Is the TLC circuitry (input compression circuitry) digital or analog? Can it be bypassed? (3) Are the K1/K2 class D amps, or class AB?

How to calculate low and high frequency extension of a driver...?

I know enclosure design + T/S parameters will indicate low frequency rolloff. I've modeled that in WinISD eval version, so I suppose that covers that end? But what about high frequency extension? In one or two other threads here, I've seen mention of an electrical T/S parameter that indicates...

Supplier for high quality capacitors, resistors, etc?

Is there a preferred or "common" supplier of "audiophile" grade polypropylene caps, metal film resistors, etc., like PE seems to be for such a wide variety of stuff? BTW, I looked at PE - they have a few things, but the selection seems limited. So who do you guys go to when building...

Anyone ever built an active crossover based on Rod Elliot's designs?

If so, what did you think of it? Easy to build? Opinion on noise, distortion specs., etc.? Sound good? Did you add output gain adjustments? Roughly what was the finished cost per channel?

What do you guys think of this crossover?

dbx 234 Looks pretty nice to me, especially at $180. In stereo operation, it is a three-way XO for each channel, using 24db/oct L-R crossover design, with the option to sum the low frequency output of the two channels into a single LF output. Independent XO points for each channel. It uses...

Recommendations for mid-bass suplementation of planars...

Just toying around with ideas, as usual, to get a feel for what each alternative for the new HT would involve. For the moment, the idea I'm toying with is magnepan's all around in a 7.1 setup. Assuming I already have a really nice sub system in place to handle L/C/R lows + LFE information...

    idiot question... sub mounting

Just curious about something. In my previous DIY projects I've mounted subs... how do I say this... "through" the front baffle. In other words, the backside of the mounting flange was in contact with the front of the baffle, with the speaker penetrating the baffle. Recently, I've seen pics...

If you had a 12V DC 35A power supply laying around... what would you do with it?

It's pretty nice, weighs a ton, but I can't think of a really good use for it. Seems like it should have some good use in a HT? If it were yours, what crazy thing(s) would you do with it?

How many drivers recommended for IB?

Yep, building a new house and HT, and I think I'm taking the IB plunge. HT room is fairly large, coming in around 7000 cu. ft. I've been perusing different drivers, doing a bit of research, trying to find what will make a good candidate for IB. Naturally, the AV15 and Tumult look very...

Hmm... a little help on QSC's amplifier lines?

I've seen QSC amps recommended for sub applications several times over the past severa weeks, and have browsed their site and some on-line retailers several times to get a feel for power/price/specs/etc. Today I wanted to get a better idea of just where they stack up to the competition. After...

Difficulty in matching passive sub to a single channel sattelite?

Suppose you want your surround channels to be "full range", but don't want to add an extra channel of amplification for each surround channel (suppose it's four channels in a 7.1 setup). Instead, you're pondering the option of adding a smallish (10" maybe) "box" sub to compliment each sattelite...
