I went to a screening of Passolini's The Gospel According to St. Matthew where the widescreen image was printed at the top of the frame with hard matted bottom that had the subtitles overlayed. The projectionist told me he had a devil of a time figuring out how to screen it, as the booth wasn't...
Per IMAX at the link: "So what does this mean for moviegoers? You get to see much more of the original image, resulting in a full panoramic view that makes you feel part of the action."
In addition to the pure word-salad, apparently, IMAX has a different definition of "panoramic" than the rest...
Copyright laws haven't been handed down by God. The Constitution gives Congress the power to create copyright (and patent) laws, but does not require Congress to do so, or set what the scope of those laws must be. And We The People can change, or even eliminate them, if they are not working.
Can you provide anymore detail on these sorts of "sign-offs"? Is it possible that when Hitchcock brought this and the other "Lost Hitchcock's" with him from Paramount that Universal messed with the negative? Getting those films was clearly a point of pride for Universal at the time, so I'm not...
If you'll look back at that chart, you'll see that there are, IIRC, 9 date "ticks" with the Blu line surpassing the HD line. But if you'll read the reports of what was said at the presentation, the Sony rep said that BD players had been outselling HD players for 12 weeks. When the presentation...
Thanks. Given that, I think I'll get both types of cable and see which works better. One follow-up -- are the basic Sony PS3 component cables adequate or are there alternatives out there that I should consider?
Hey everyone - I am an inch away from being sold on a PS3, which would be used primarily as a Blu-Ray player with some gaming as well. I have a Mits WS-65315. It's a 2004 model with an HDCP-compliant DVI input, 1080i native resolution. Any CRT RPTV owners with any advice on what type of...
I'm about to take the Blu-Ray plunge and am trying to decide between the PS3 and (forthcoming reviews permitting) the new Sony player. My specific question relates to the PS3 and its SACD/high-res audio capabilities. I do not have a receiver with HDMI, just 5.1 analog inputs. From what I've...
I'm wondering the same thing, whether pairing the 981 with my Mits WS-65315 will provide any benefit. I've heard one opinion that 480p is the best source for CRT RPTVs and that upscaling gives little/no benefit or actually degrades performance. Anybody have experiences he/she can share?
I just got a Samsung TS 360 D* HD receiver that I am hooking up to a Mits 65WS315. Any thoughts/experience on what the best connection for this is, component vs. DVI? I thought I had read that some people had iffy experiences with the 315’s DVI input, but don't remember where or when. Any...
My sense is that the new ads (and PPV programs "expiring") is not so much Tivo looking for new revenue as it is that networks are holding TiVo's feet to the fire and threatening legal action if TiVo doesn't stop making their advertising "less valuable." Such litigation would be baseless, but...
I've used a Philips Pronto for about 3 years now and don't know how I got on without it. Touch screen remotes are a matter of personal preference/dislike, but I believe the new Pronto models have 4 hard buttons (which is good for play, pause, FF and Rew), channel/volume/mute, and a transport...
I’ve tried repeatedly to get the tangle of wires and cables on the back of my system in order with no luck. I’ve tried bundling cables, separating cables, running groups of cables different ways – each ends up creating its own unique mess. The rack I use is exposed, so it ends up being somewhat...
As far as philip's reliability goes, I've had the Pronto TSU2000 (refurbished) for going on four years now. I've never had a single problem with it and don't know how I ever got on without it.
This is total speculation, but I've long suspected that many of the early Criterions such as these that were recent LD releases but not Janus titles came out due to something akin to a contractual "loophole" where CC's rights to the film could be interpreted to extend to DVD as well as LD. (I'm...
Anybody have any opinions on how this pioneer stacks up against the comparable Mitsubishis like the WS-65513 as far as picture quality (HD and SD)? The one on display looks expectedly terrible. My costco has one of these left in stock and I've been fighting the urge to make the jump. I also...
To send X10 signals via IR, you'll need something like the IR543 IR to X10 transceiver. You'll also (obviously) need a remote control that can send or be programmed to send the correct IR signals to the IR543. You can get a lot of information as well at the remotecentral.com X10 forum.
Thanks everyone for your responses - I finally got it figured out. Who knew that in the days when everything is on the remote control and you can do almost nothing on the actual unit that the one control I needed was on the face of the unit?!
In the next few months I'm going to be replacing my tried and true SD 32" Sony with a 65" RPTV. My wife and I have been talking about what we would put it in and think that we're going to have some sort of bookshelf/entertainment center built into the room. If I went this route, I'm thinking...
I hate to ask this because I'm usually better at figuring this stuff out, but I'm going to anyway... I just got a Denon 1600 DVD player that is DVD-A compatible and I have it hooked up through my Onkyo 898 receiver. For video, I'm running an optical audio cable (the only digital output on the...
I agree too. For example, my TV, DVD, and receiver remotes only have ON/OFF toggle buttons, and the receiver only has an "Input" button that, when pressed, cycles through the different inputs in a pre-set sequence. Nevertheless, I have set up macros so that one button will turn on the components...
Even if your gear and standard remotes just have toggle switches, you can usually still find discrete codes for even the cheapest components. As long as you have a remote that will let you manually input IR codes from your computer (eg, the Pronto and its kin), the folks at Remote Central...
For the past 3 years I have used X10-based lamp modules from homeautomationnet-DOT-com with an IR543, controling it with my Pronto remote. I have never had any problems, and I recently upgraded to the X10-based Switchlinc wall switches to control overhead lights and am completely satisfied with...
Depends how big/heavy your speakers are. Most can probably be hung on wall mounts using 2-3 screws or drywall anchors. The holes can be spackled and sanded down on move out without too much trouble, but you may run into problems with mismatched paint, then your landlord getting suspicious over...
A timely thread, as we just put crown molding up in three rooms in our house this weekend, and even with a mitre saw it was enough to drive me insane! Anyway, based on what we did, I have a suggestion if you're installing new moldings and want to run wire behind it. The molding we installed...
I have the TSU-2000, and also love it. The fact that it is completely customizable is incredible - EVERY button can be a macro - although I'll add that you can get pretty obsessive programming it once you use it and start to discover its capabilities. That being said, the software for it is a...
I did something similar recently to run cables for my L/R surrounds and 2 rear surrounds. Radio Shack carries a four-speaker wall plate (ie, has 8 total binding posts) that fits in a single-gang electrical box. However, after I installed it, I realized how little room that leaves you to...
