    Which Amadeus?

I noticed that several of the deleted scenes contained modern language and expressions that felt out of place. It doesn't make sense to put so much work into award-winning costumes and sets and then use expressions like "in that department" or "I don't give a damn." It seemed to break the spell.

DVD killing Theaters? (Drive-In and Seated)

Count me in with those who don't go to the theaters because of people who talk. I think the theater would be a great way to get out of the house once in a while. What makes it so frustrating is that on the rare occasions when I do go, most people get it. We pay, we sit in silence, we watch...

Time to get another player: was that the Director's cut or ClearPlay?

Not to beat a dead horse, but Clearplay doesn't "change" a movie. There are no "versions" or "edited movies." The consumer bought the movie off the shelf. The consumer is making a personal choice to avoid watching certain parts. They are certainly aware that they aren't watching the whole movie...

Time to get another player: was that the Director's cut or ClearPlay?

If I wrote a book and then someone else sold an alternate, unapproved version with the parts they didn't like cut out, I'd be ticked too. If someone else sold a publication telling people that before reading my book they should tear out certain pages because they might be offended, I'd call...

Time to get another player: was that the Director's cut or ClearPlay?

I don't know if anyone's obsessed. I think talk of tearing pages from books is meant to conjure up images of farmers with pitchforks throwing copies of Huckleberry Finn on the fire while their ultra-conservative preacher leers, his face illuminated by the flickering flames. I've never torn a...

Time to get another player: was that the Director's cut or ClearPlay?

I think that "respecting the artist" is a bit overrated. When some actor makes the "oh my, I can't believe I've been shot" face while fake bullets blow out his back in the movie I pulled out of the $5.88 bin at Wal-Mart, is that art? I guess in a sense it is, but it doesn't rate a very high...

Time to get another player: was that the Director's cut or ClearPlay?

Sorry, I don't mean to get so ornery over absolutely nothing. In truth, I would feel a little bit hypocritical. If a film glorifies violence, how much will that be diminished by not actually seeing the person get blown up/shot/impaled on screen? Personally, I wouldn't feel like I was being...

Time to get another player: was that the Director's cut or ClearPlay?

I think you're seeing the point. No, I don't read Playboy and cut out the pictures. But so what if I do? Maybe I'll try it tonight. Why would I give my money to a corporation, etc. etc.? Because I choose to. And telling me to watch other movies isn't reasoning. It's giving me an order, or, to...

Time to get another player: was that the Director's cut or ClearPlay?

There are two arguments I see often regarding this subject, and I just don't see how they hold up. To paraphrase: A) I don't understand why anyone would want to watch an edited movie. That's fine. Don't understand it. Does everyone really need to understand what everyone else does? I can't...

    Radiohead distortion

It kicks in at about 2:32. I'm noticing it on my headphones at work too, so I guess it is part of the recording. It's unfortunate because to me it sounds more like blown speakers than bad recording. I had ordered it off eBay and the guy sent me a ripped CD with an inkjet-printed label, so at...

    Radiohead distortion

Hi, When I listen to Sail to the Moon on Radiohead's Hail to the Thief, there are times, particularly in the second verse, when it sounds somewhat distorted, just a little bit crackly. It drives me nuts not knowing if something is wrong with my speakers. Has anyone else noticed that? Thanks

How loud do you go? Decibel Question

I tested once with my meter to see what the maximum sound level was that I could bear in my small living room. Music peaking at 90 decibels was unbearable. I prefer it peaking at 75-80 decibels, no matter how good the music is.

    When will Intel

I'm waiting on this as well, the supposed < $2000 Intel LCOS displays they predicted for the 2004 holiday season. If nothing materializes I'll look into some other RPTV, but this sounded rather promising. Here's a link to one article.[/url] OK, that didn't work. But there's lots of info if you...

    TiVo or ReplayTV

Tivo Series 1 records by time and channel without a service fee. I've been using it for about a month and it's very convenient. You can record individual shows or repeatedly record certain time slots. You can get them on eBay for under $200. Scott

    Content Censoring DVD players

One key to a successful lawsuit is proving damage, either monetary or in the form of suffering. What, specifically, is the damage? No one loses money and no one suffers. Anyone using ClearPlay knows he is using it, so the edits can't be confused with the original work. In order to sue someone...

Please don't post edited versions of my posts. That creates a derivative work that isn't true to my original vision. ;)

    Content Censoring DVD players

I been flipping through this thread again, and I've read about how any technology that would edit the content of a film without the director's permission is wrong, and that it's disrespectful to the director. If that's disrepectful, then who says I have to respect him? I watch movies strictly...

    Content Censoring DVD players

I'd like to better understand why someone would object to what someone does or does not choose to watch edited in their own home. No one reading this forum can even tell whether I watch the original or edited version of a film. It's a tree that falls in a forest with no one around; my decision...

    REPLAY/TIVO and service fees?

I just bought a Series 1 Tivo on eBay because it lets me record by time and channel without a subscription. You can get an 80-hour model for right around $160. It mentions that it will "nag" you for not phoning in, but it's hardly noticeable.

JBL Studios with N24s as surrounds

This is probably quite a moot point, now that all these speakers are being discontinued. But anyway, I replaced my N38s and N-Center with S38s and an S-Center. The S-Center came first, so I ran that for a few days with the N38s, and it sounded unusual, as expected. Last night I hooked up the...

JBL Studios with N24s as surrounds

I guess I'll just take this one step at a time. When the S38s arrive I'll turn off the center and run a few surround demos, like where the motorcycle rides around the room or the jet flies by, and see just how bad it is or isn't. I'll report back the results for anyone who cares. (I'm a fairly...

JBL Studios with N24s as surrounds

S38II vs Paradigm Reference Studio 20s

The sound of the N38 isn't all that detailed. When I listen to music where lots of instruments or voices are heard at once, they seem to mush together just a little bit. The S38 has received so many glowing reviews that I'm hoping perhaps I'd hear a marked improvement over the N38s.

S38II vs Paradigm Reference Studio 20s

I've had JBL N38s for a year or so, but I'm not 100% satisfied with their music performance. (Reciever is an AVR325.) From the reviews I've read, the Paradigms are preferred, but the price is a harder sell with the wife. I don't have anywhere convenient to listen to the Paradigms. Are they...

    HK triple crossover settings

I read the ICBM information. It looked easier to apply - take the speaker's +/-3dB low end response, add 10Hz, and use the next highest available setting. On the other hand, it contradicts the idea of setting it an octave higher than the that same low end response point. If the product is built...

    Subwoofer Hum, please help

The TV cable is a frequent culprit. If you have it plugged into your receiver or TV, try disconnecting it and see if the hum stops. My cable guy connected the cable to the grounding screw on my wall outlet. It worked for a day, then it loosened and I had a much quieter hum. Then I used a...
