Yah, in the kino thread they announced it a little while ago. I for one can't wait because the two DVDs I have are BEYOND HORRIBLE.

Hopefully The Kino blu will look great.

Never ever thought this would come to blu.

Dear Warren aka battlebeast ... I must have missed that announcement. Anything else Very Old coming up? I suppose I could scroll through endless pages of comments, but you're always on top of these things.

Well, I try to be on top!

There are many Old titles coming from Kino, but none that I can see that are Oscar winners. (Although, kino did say they were going to release an Oscar Winner on DVD, but didn't say which one.)

So far, only THE FRONT PAGE that I know of is coming (for Oscar winners that haven't been released on Blu Ray.) oh, and you know about VIVA VILLA!

I'll let you know if I find anything out!

Kino's been doing a very good job getting select titles out of PD hell onto quality blu-rays. Of Human Bondage, Hell's House, and The Death Kiss have all looked excellent so I have high hopes for this one.

Kino's been doing a good job with this "Library of Congress" line they started in 2013.

Joe Hudak ... agreed! Now if they'd only go for some of the missing silents in the Library of Congress, such as THE CROWD, THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE and GREED. I'd also love to see KING OF JAZZ and STATE FAIR from the early 30s.

STATE FAIR is a fox title... I'd love to see it. It was a shame Fox didn't release it as part of their "cinema classics" collection. But i suspect it has to do with condition, like EAST LYNNE or THE WHITE PARADE. Although, when I watched it, it didn't seem too terrible.

Those are all under copyright with rights held at various studios. Might happen one day, but not from Kino.

THE CROWD, GREED and another major silent I've been hoping for, THE WIND, all reside with Warner Bros., who I hope will decide to place these into the Archive series and get them out on Blu. I also hope the same for some of their foreign language properties, such as DAY FOR NIGHT, THE EMIGRANTS/THE NEW LAND, AKIRA KUROSAWA'S DREAMS, etc. I'm happy they're releasing obscure musicals such as THANK YOUR LUCKY STARS and HIT THE DECK, but certainly the above titles would hold as much interest....

No release date, but DAY FOR NIGHT is coming from Criterion:

Definitely agree on THE NEW LAND and THE EMIGRANTS. There must be some knotty rights problems with these as they never hit even dvd. I was excited when I saw that TCM was going to show it recently, but it was a fairly awful transfer with bad English dubbing. I would also like to see his somewhat disastrous American debut, ZANDY'S BRIDE just to see Gene Hackman and Liv Ullmann together.

ZANDY'S BRIDE was released on standard DVD from the Warner Archive in 2013. :)

The Front Page being part of Kino's excellent LoC line is confirmed. Should be a definitive release.

I watched it last night.

Wow! What a difference an HD transfer from from 35mm film makes. I can actually see objects I never saw before. Including risque photos the newshounds had hanging on the wall of the press room.

There are a few contrast issues here and there and the sound can sometimes get muffled, but it's a huge upgrade to a classic comedy that still packs a punch with it's sardonic take on capital punishment, the free press, and corrupt politicians.
