Earlier this week there were numerous reports that the BDA had finalized the 4K specification. Strange how rumors spread.

Victor Matsuda, chair of the BDA's global promotion group was quite surprised by the news telling MESA that are still incomplete and that there isn't any new information outside of what was provided at CES. Matsuda is hopeful to start licensing mid-year and to have 4K BD discs and hardware available by this XMas.

If it ends up being spring of 2016 that is what it will be but as long as they do not rush it I would shure love to see it this year! And as much as I love the bluray format I do not like that they rushed it to market after HD-DVD beat them to retail shelves. I hope we do not see them rush UHD bluray to market because if we see problems with how it functions it could very well have a negative impact on consumers adopting UHD bluray! But since my Denon 1611 UD just stopped playing DVD's I would like to have a UHD player in my ht rack before Christmas if it is in the cards. The Bluray Association need to be more proactive and if it is actually going to be out this year they need to start marketing UHD bluray and let consumers know it is on there way and let them know there is a good reason to go out and buy that shinny new UHD TV. One of the things that did not help was putting out UHD TV's that would not be compatible with the new players! What I want to know is the standard finalized and if not how close are they? And why are they not trying to build excitement with enthusiasts by releasing information in forums like this one that would not cost them anything.

According to an email I just got from Oppo when I asked them about if they would have a Oppo UHD Bluray player available around Christmas 2015.

Dave,

We will not have a UHD player until sometime in late-2016 or early-2017.

Ultra HD Blu-Ray Specification Now Complete, Logo Unveiled

Ty Pendlebury, CNET

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has announced the Ultra HD Blu-ray (4K) specification is now complete and have also revealed the next-gen format’s official logo.

The new disc format promises the incorporation of the latest video standards and players will also be backwards compatible with existing Blu-ray discs.

The BDA says the format incorporates a 3840x2160 resolution, expanded color range support, high dynamic range (HDR), and high frame rate content (read 60fps). As well as the promise of up-to-date video, UHD Bluray will also support “next-generation immersive, object-based sound formats”.

The BDA has yet to expand on which specific standards will be supported as for each of these features there are a number of competing options: for example there are two object-based sound formats–DTS:X and Dolby Atmos. We have reached out to the BDA for further clarification.

In addition UHD Blu-ray will bring with it the UltraViolet-like “digital bridge feature” which will allow consumers to “view their content across the range of in-home and mobile devices”.

The Association has announced it will begin licensing Ultra HD Blu-ray products in Summer 2015.

Panasonic was the first company to announce a prototype Ultra HD Blu-ray player at this year’s CES and consumers can expect to see players hit the market by the end of 2015.

Now they just have to get their copy protection part of the specification resolved... :(

However, there seems to be a growing consensus that something will be out by EOY. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Only authoring software from Scenarist and PHL at this time for UHD authoring. No ETA on Sony Blu-print UHD support, hoping next year. I am waiting on Blu-print to author a UHD / HDR calibration disc. We tried to use Scenarist on our last disc and it just crashed continually and they were not interested in fixing it.

I see UHD Blu-ray being used more for HDR HD than UHD. Most content can be re-mastered for HDR because the source has the dynamic range already. Can't say the same for content and VFX done at HD resolution.
