Recently, the speaker that my fraternity has been using for our parties and mixers broke. We have a budget of ~$250 and are looking for a speaker system to play music in a 20 x 20 ft room.

Because the system will mostly be used for dance music, the bass is of paramount importance. Loudness is also preferred over clarity.

We always use an aux cord connected to a laptop to play our music, so unless anybody has a better suggestion, you can assume that that is the input we will use. Aside from the aux cord, we have no speaker equipment at all.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

So you want a pair of powered speakers with a lot of bass for $250? I'm not an expert but I think that's a tough order. I did find this DJ set that might fit the bill but I have no idea how it sounds. Seems kinda cheap but hey could work. Your other option is to by an amp and passive speakers so that if one or the other nukes you can replace just that component.

So I got some new info from our treasurer today and I now have up to $500 to spend on the speaker system. I hope that is a little more reasonable.

Here are some options I would consider.

[*]You could get the bigger version (15") of what I liked above DJ set with stands.
[*]Get 2 of these BIC 15" floorstanders and an amp like this A500 Should be just over your $500. The A500 has RCA inputs so nothing fancy is needed to get this guy hooked up to your computer.
[*]F12 sub $200, DV62 $100, A500 $200. 2.1 that should pretty much jam. You'll probably want to get some stands for those bookshelf speakers or wall mount them. You could also get a cheaper stereo receiver like this Sony if you need to get stands, wire ect.
[/list]
I'm assuming that you don't have a separate amplifier. If you already have the amplifier then you have different options open to you.

At Musicians Friend...JBL JRX225. Open box for $300 something. Freaks of nature at 100db at 1watt. Feed them 10 watts, you are already at 110db...Want 120db...feed them 100 watts. 100wpc amp can be had cheap.

Just realized those JBL are "each".Mackie C200. Still highly efficient, will provide a continuous 118db(if you buy enough amp) without killing themselves.
