...i just read that this will occur Sept 21st.   Wouldn't be great if SONY would make it possible for current PS-3 owners to purchased SONY "exclusive" titles.  i would definitely purchase a 3-D tele. now except for the lack of generally available titles.  This might help as an incentive, especially if i am not looking at a SONY T.V.  Right now their strategy is preventing me from purchasing any 3-D tele. until more titles are generally available.

I updated my PS3 for the 3D update and it works perfectly with my 3D tv. Its nice to have a free 3D bluray player with your PS3

This update allows 3D content to be seen on 3D TVs, but disables HD Audio output on 3D titles.

Yeah loosing that HD audio is a drawback. But until I get my 1.4 HDMi receiver and a 3D bluray player, I'm happy just to watch 3d content on my PS3 connected directly to my 3Dtv.

Maybe a future PS3 will be able to do lossless audio with 3D.  The newer "slim" has the ability to directly bit-stream lossless audio, an ability which firmware updates never provided to the "fat".
