Posted this in the Oscar nomination discussion before I saw this topic, anyway:

Am I the only one that was surprised that "Walk the Line" was nominated in the "Musical or Comedy" category? I haven't seen the film, but all I've heard about it made think that, sure there's singing in it due to the subject matter, but I certainly wouldn't have pegged it for that category - maybe my mind will change if I get a chance to see it. That just stood out to me in the nominations.

Bummed about no King Kong BP nomination, but glad to see Jackson's name in the Director category again, then again, I've never given too much credence to the GGs anyway (well, about as much as I give to the Oscars at least, ).

I also found the lack of Munich in BP interesting, particularly in light of Constant Gardener and History of Violence being recognized. I was also somewhat surprised by MatchPoint being up there, I've been interested in seeing it, but most of the talk I've heard is just how different it seems to be for Woody Allen.

I'm also glad to see Matt Dillon up there for Crash, well deserved, IMO.

Christmas In Love? What the heck is that? Whatever it is, I missed it. I hope Dolly wins, just because she'd be so adorable if she won.

This list is totally incomplete without Joan Allen's performance in the Upside of Anger. Tragic, I say.

Or the incomparable Sarah Chalke. GG are the Hollywood Foreign Press. Not all shows are created equal in their eyes, nor all films.

Oh well,
Chuck

Proof was better then I thought, I enjoyed it.
North Country was too over the top and changed too much historical facts, IMHO, and wasn't up to the hyper.

I did want to see both films, but it just didn't come together. I knew that NC wasn't considered all that great, but that Charlize was receiving praise. I kept putting it off, saying I'll see it next week, next week, next week. Many a movie has fallen by the wayside because of my next weeks. That's what happened with Proof too.

I'm also surprised that Munich didn't get a BP nom. That's gotta be a major blow to the Munich crew. I still think it'll get an Oscar nom.

Who's Sarah Chalke?

She's the female lead on Scrubs, which is about 10,000 times more challenging a role as anything on Desperate Housewives...TV talk here, Vickie :)

Cillian Murphy is a transvestite/transsexual in Breakfast on Pluto but I can't remember the plot details. It's directed by Neil Jordan but is supposed to be much lighter fare than The Crying Game.

Hustle & Flow was way underseen because people dismiss the subject matter unfairly. Not the best movie I've seen this year, but a very good one. I think Terrence Howard's performance (and Jeff Daniels, too) were "better" than PSH in Capote.

I haven't seen all these films yet so I can't fully comment on them but so far of what I have seen is that Revenge Of The Sith is far and away the best soundtrack I've heard this year-maybe even the past 2 years.) Too bad it didn't get a nom. :frowning: The ROTS score has some of everything...Oh well. Bummer.

I think John Williams has been on a roll too with last years absolutely stunning work on Azkaban and this year's ROTS. Two of his best ever.

Another baffling nom is Pride and Prejudice as Comedy-Musical. Although it had contained some humor, it certainly wasn't made as a comedy per se. I think the GG categories are silly; nutty foreign journalists...
