She's a favorite of mine too and not so much due to her acting talent.;) A rather see "Lady in White" instead of one of those other lesser titles.

Mark and Charles...
You forgot Million Dollar Mermaid (1952)
htf_images_smilies_smiley_jawdrop.gif

I wouldn't be surprised if those movies are in the collection. Just as long as they leave out Easy to Wed and save it for a Lucille Ball collection.

At least 50% of the suggestions are of the type which would bankrupt Warners as George Feltenstein said. One has to be realistic.

That's a great idea ;).

I'm surprised no one thought of this before:

The Historical Epics Collection
Quo Vadis
Anthony Adverse
Juarez
Marie Antionette
Cimmaron SE 2-disc edition with both versions

I'm sure this will probably show up down the line somewhere-- I would be interested in seeing a box set of Edward G. Robinson films, preferably ones that haven't already been released such as TWO SECONDS or THE HATCHET MAN. Robinson is a well enough known actor to warrent a signature set (unlike some that have been listed who get a "huh?" in my book).

Al Jolson isn't exactly selling material and doesn't excite the PC crowd, but it would be nice to see a quick and dirty box set of his films come out.

What really gets me about these releases are that there are films that Warners puts into the sets as the "seller" titles, completely overlooking the fact that 9/10 times, the set already has a popular-yet-unreleased title.

Ah. I re-read Jack's comment in light of your post, Robert, and realise he meant those listed *in this thread*. :b Sorry, Jack, as you were – I too would take an Edward G Robinson box over many of those suggested here; good suggestion.

Wow, I love this thread. And let me be another person to say
I would buy this set in a heartbeat:

The Great MGM Flops Collection
PARNELL
ICE FOLLIES of 1939
KISSING BANDIT
SUMMER HOLIDAY
HOT RODS TO HELL
LIVING IN A BIG WAY

I would add THE MINIVER STORY to that list, except I would love to see it in this collection instead:

THE GREER GARSON COLLECTION
Remember
Blossoms In the Dust
Pride and Prejudice
Mrs. Miniver (SE)
The Miniver Story
The Valley of Decision
Madam Curie
That Forsyte Woman
Adventure
Sunrise at Campobello

In regard to that Esther Williams set, I would think (HOPE) it will be one of Warners big Christmas releases this year. Her films always sell well on EBAY, so there is certainly financial incentive. I just hope they include Duchess of Idaho (with both Lena Horne outtakes), Pagan Love Song (which has many outtakes) and that they include her 1942 propaganda short in which the devil makes a phone call to Hitler. I have never seen it, but it is titled Inflation.

Warner's doing excellent work, and I'm so glad the Val Lewton set is coming. But I would like to see them get out more of the Vintage Horror Titles, many of which have been mentioned, such as:

Dr X (Warner, 1932)
The Mask of Fu Manchu (MGM, 1932) -UNCUT VERSION!!
Mad Love (MGM, 1935)
Mark of the Vampire (MGM, 1935)
The Devil Doll (MGM, 1935)
The Walking Dead (Warner, 1936)
The Return of Dr X (Warner, 1939)
The Spiral Staircase (RKO, 1945)
The Beast With Five Fingers (Warner, 1946)
THE GIANT BEHEMOTH
FROM HELL IT CAME
THE GREEN SLIME
TROG
FRANKENSTEIN 1970
THE CYCLOPS
ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN

* Just a suggestion here, but Warner has three films featuring Boris Karloff, and could make a "Karloff Collection":

FRANKENSTEIN 1970
THE WALKING DEAD
THE MASK OF FU MANCHU (uncut version)

*Throw in Bela Lugosi and Peter Lorre along with Karloff and you've got a "Masters of Horror" Set:

FRANKENSTEIN 1970 (Karloff)
THE WALKING DEAD (Karloff)
THE MASK OF FU MANCHU (Karloff)
MARK OF THE VAMPIRE (Lugosi)
BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS (Lorre)
MAD LOVE (Lorre)

*Hey, Peter M. Fitzgerald -- I just saw your list; nice ideas there!

Actually, THE MINIVER STORY is a very interesting film--more compelling and authentic than its predecessor if only by virtue of its supporting cast (Leo Genn, James Fox, Peter Finch) and its post-War London location shooting. Garson herself loathed the "StiffUpperLip"-pery of the original and volunteered to do the sequel only if they killed off MRS. MINIVER.
Any MGM flop collection mandates the inclusion of JUPITER'S DARLING (1955), an underwater musical about Hannibal's invasion of Rome, that concluded Esther Williams' career at MGM and almost single-handedly finished off the musical genre at MGM. Perhaps Ms. Williams could provide a commentary.
One of the great things about Fox dvds is how candid they are about their fiascos from an objective historical point of view (CLEOPATRA, MYRA BRECKINRIDGE, SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE). Personally, I would take a release of SUMMER HOLIDAY under any circumstances (flop; paired with AH! WILDERNESS; Mickey Rooney or Arthur Freed collections). Great score, great Americana, inventive direction by Rouben Mamoulian, fine camerawork!!...And a great 4th of July movie!

Thanks, Joe. One thing about a title you listed, THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE (1946); though originally distributed by RKO to theaters, it was a Selznick picture, thus now in the Disney/ABC library. Disney/ABC loaned that package of films out to Anchor Bay for R1 DVD release several years ago (though that DVD is now out-of-print).

THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE is now, at least temporarily, in Sony/MGM's hands, since Disney/ABC has licensed that part of its catalog to them now (i.e. HELL IN THE PACIFIC, JUNIOR BONNER, CHARLY, PORTRAIT OF JENNIE, A MINUTE TO PRAY A SECOND TO DIE, THE NIGHT STALKER/THE NIGHT STRANGLER, etc). The deal Disney made with MGM was prior to Sony's aquisition of the MGM company, so I'm not sure if the Sony/MGM merger has any impact on that Disney sublicense, at this point.

Confusing, ain't it? ;)

LOL, I love this thread. I wonder which suggested box set will be the next one announced from Warners, and how "close" it will come to someone's wish list.

i hope we'll see this 12 months from now for her birthday in '06

i heard the Thin Man Collection was selling very well over on Amazon- hopefully that will be a sign to the studio to release the non TM pairings of Loy & Powell in another set not too far down the line (like next year, wink wink)

Did anyone mention a Peter Lorre/Sydney Greenstreet box set, with the likes of THREE STRANGERS (with the late Geraldine Fitzgerald) and THE MASK OF DIMITRIOS? Well, I'm mentioning it now. :)

It has not been as well publicized, but WB also has rights on films from the Otto Preminger estate, and aside from ADVISE AND CONSENT (which was in the "Controversial Classics" box) and THE CARDINAL (which got a two-disc treatment), they could make a great box set containing:

ANGEL FACE
THE MOON IS BLUE
THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM
SAINT JOAN
and maybe THE CARDINAL reformatted to a standard keepcase.
