Koch Media is adding The Glass Key to its Noir Blu-ray line-up. Another teaming of Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd, together with Brian Donlevy under Stuart Heisler's direction. Set for release on April 28:

http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01BHPUA4W?keywords=der gläserne schlussel&qid=1455047799&ref_=sr_1_fkmr1_1&sr=8-1-fkmr1

On the same day, Koch is also releasing a DVD of Casbah as part of its Film Noir range, starring Yvonne de Carlo, Peter Lorre and Tony Martin. I've never seen it, but with de Carlo and Lorre in the leads, shall pick it up blind:

http://www.amazon.de/Casbah-Verbote...ie=UTF8&qid=1455048833&sr=1-1&keywords=Casbah

Casbah is a musical re-make of Pepe Le Moko. Tony Martin stars and sings exceptionally well. I enjoy the film a lot, but be warned: the orthodox opinion on this film is that it's garbage. I disagree but you might not!

The French Blu-ray release of CUSTER OF THE WEST is said to be an absolute disaster. Maybe this will be an improvement, but, buyer beware.

I'm not sure where this orthodox opinion is coming from. The Maltin guide gives it three stars.

Just watched the Glass Key on DVD a few months ago, who would have thought that one gets a Blu-ray release?
I enjoyed it a lot, glad to see that others will be able to watch it on Blu-ray now.

A subpar transfer is what I would expect, something like the first Spartacus disc when it should look like 55 Days at Peking or Circus World.

Ramin:

Forgive me for only paying passing interest to this thread...

But would a release such as Koch's The Glass Key be an all-region release? Or will it be Region B/2 locked?

Thanks.

Mike,

I buy many of Koch's releases and they could be all-region or region B locked. My suggestion is to wait and let one of us that has bought these releases beforehand check it out first. I plan on buying this disc so I'll let you know.

Has anyone seen the German Blu of the 1948 Fox adaptation of ANNA KARENINA, starring Vivien Leigh? I'm in Germany at the moment and found it at Muller for 2.99 Euros. Tried to find reviews for it on my phone before buying it, but came up empty. I can't even find a listing for it on Amazon.de. I picked it up because it was the last copy and, of course, you can't beat the price, but I hope it's not awful.

Striking out at the other media stores I always hit when I'm here. Prices seem to be nearly always cheaper at Amazon and my German gf has Prime now, so just like in the US, b&m stores have a hard time competing. And, of course, the other frustration I always encounter here is no English options on so many titles I'm interested in. Time to learn German!

Glen, I don't have Anna Karenina (1948), but there is a listing on Amazon.de for a market seller fulfilment Blu-ray:

http://www.amazon.de/Anna-Karenina-Blu-ray/dp/B007T64DHE

I don't know anything about the distribution label, Powerstation. Reviews seem to be all over the place, both for the Blu and the DVD. I usually get a Google Translate sampling of the lowest and highest rated Blus to get some sort of an idea.

This is what one reviewer with the lowest rating had to offer:

"But what is that, on the Blu is no HD image, no, not even a decent SD picture. The image appears to come from a VCR or an Internet source and it shows immediately."

The couple of high rated Blu-ray reviews referred to the movie more than the disc characteristics.

Nevertheless, at the low price of 2.88 Euros I was still going to order it, but the seller won't ship to Oz.

Please post again with reviews of this Blu and any other titles you happen to pick up there on your travels!

Yeah - what he said!

Koch is on a bit of a roll it seems. They are also releasing The Spoilers on Blu on April 14 in their Western Legends line-up. I've never seen this either, but with Jeff Chandler, Anne Baxter and Rory Calhoun, it's a definite pickup for me. I think it's a Technicolor remake of the John Wayne, Marlene Dietrich, Randolph Scott film of a dozen years prior:

Ramin,

Many thanks for all the useful information. You have come through again. I have no idea why I couldn't find the listing for it at Amazon.de. I searched three times in five different ways and it never appeared! In any case, I'm glad you unearthed it.

I am able to return the title and I'm thinking I probably will, even though it was so cheap. I can apply that money toward a title I want more. My brother has taken over collecting all the westerns and will share access to them, so that frees me up to further my other collecting interests. The new 4K restoration of THE THIRD MAN is high on my list so maybe I'll throw in the refund from ANNA and pick that one up. I did see the new Edgar Wallace krimi triple feature Blu at the store tonight, but it was 36.99 Euros, which is too high for me.

It is a remake and isn't as nearly as good either.

It's still quite watchable. I enjoy the Technicolor U-I programmers from the 1950s. Hopefully, there will be more of them released.

Slightly off-topic, even though I'm probably wasting money at this point by continuing to subscribe, I like when Encore-Westerns plays a programmer that they have not already played a million (seemingly) times. For instance, I was lucky enough to catch (and record --> burn to DVD) another Jeff Chandler film, FoxFire (though some might argue it is only barely a Western). I'm thinking they hardly ever played it before the time I caught it, and they've hardly ever played it since.

Foxfire is also supposed to have been the last film shot with the Technicolor 3-strip camera. It is a rarely seen film.

I've given up on DEADLINE USA ever going down in price and think I'm just going to pick it up at 12:45 Euros with Prime, sent to my gf's house here in Germany. Then I'll just take it back to the States with me and at least save the shipping cost.

I loved the film when I was a teen, but last time I watched it I found it so heavy handed, as is typical of Richard Brooks (who once named a character in Spanish that translated to "Jesus Rise," haha). Still though, the cast is tremendous, it's about newspapers, a subject that is fast becoming obsolete, and it's Bogart. I'm on a mission to own every Bogart, Cagney and Robinson film on Blu, my three favorite actors.

I bought the UK BD release over a year ago and haven't regretted it. I've always thought it was a fine film.
