Some comments in various recent threads got me thinking on how my current collection breaks down.

I've listed mine chronologically, categorized by decade (or the decade they began in, for shows that straddled decades), followed by:

1.) the main reason I own it

2.) if I own it on blu-ray

3.) if I purchased from another region (rare, in my case)

4.) if a sale price tipped the scales in favor of me picking it up

5.) whether I own the complete series (box set or no), plan to purchase further available seasons, stopped at a certain point in its run, have all that's currently (or ever will be) available and/or the releases have been stalled/abandoned

Not counted are home-made recordings/trades, Made-for-TV movies or sample episodes that are included as bonus material on movie discs (i.e. The Thin Man on FORBIDDEN PLANET) and the like.

These reasons should be relatively self-explanatory.

I only pick up tv shows I'm interested in, or stuff that has an interesting premise to me. There is no point in wasting time and money on tv shows that I have no interest in. (Not even wasting $5 a pop for a season set of a tv show that I have no interest in).

I generally wait for a tv season set to tumble to less than $20 a pop. (Though with a few exceptions). I usually bide my time and pick up all the officially released seasons eventually.

2.) if I own it on blu-ray

I don't make much of a distinction between the dvd and bluray versions of a particular tv season set. This is largely due to the absence of bluray tv season sets of shows that I am interested in.

But in the end, bluray is preferable to dvd, if the bluray is available at $20 a pop or less.

For a tv show that I really like which is available on bluray, I may pick it up at $25 a pop or less. (Or even $30 or more, such as Star Trek). For example, I have picked up the bluray season sets of "Person of Interest" when they tumbled to $20-$25 during or shortly after black friday.

But overall, I usually wait for the bluray to tumble to $20 a pop or less. (I have only ever made two first-week purchases of a bluray tv season set. Never again).
