I recently bought the RX-V640 and the receiver gets hot on the top of the case. When it gets warm to hot the top part of the case where the vents are have a spongy type feel to it when I press down on the top of the case. Is it normal?

Define "spongy" :)

Well, it's normal for it to get warm. It shouldn't be hot enough to hurt to the touch. Any other signs of overheating?
Does it ever shut itself off?

I dont think the top is serving as of primary support structure. Its more like cover. It should fairly flex if you press it hard. The base of the receiver I think is the primary support structure.
