MGM created a fair amount of poor and merely adequete transfers for some of their best titles. They also released all of their 1.66:1 titles with non-anamorphic transfers. A lot of bare bones editions, too. Sony are trawling through their library now, so which titles should they definitely reissue?

12 Angry Men (non anamorphic; bare bones)
Night of the Hunter (open matte? bare bones)
Kiss Me Deadly (non anamorphic; bare bones)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (non anamorphic)
    The Train (non anamorphic)
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (non anamorphic)
Sweet Smell of Success (non anamorphic)
Paths of Glory (hard-matted 1.66:1 cropped to 4:3? open-matte? bare bones)
Moby Dick (1956) (open-matte/cropped; bare bones)
Woody Allen films (all bare bones; some transfers could be better)
The Graduate (needs a deluxe SE)
Eye of the Needle (non anamorphic; bare bones)
Carrie (weak transfer, even on the SE)
Bound for Glory (soft, non anamorphic; bare bones)
The Apartment (poor transfer; bare bones)
Heaven's Gate (very poor transfer; bare bones; deserves a SE, with commentary by Cimino and the 80-minute documentary, Final Cut: The Making and Unmaking of Heaven's Gate)

    What else?

some scope films that MGM released full screen

    BILLIE
    GATOR
    BANK SHOT
    CARBON COPY

but this is Sony we are talking about, MGM released CUTTING EDGE 16x9, Sony reissued it non anamorphic and with a PAL speed up, they also drop widescreen versions of their titles, I am afraid they will not re-issue these catalog titles properly.

    Who'll Stop the Rain
    Jean De Florette
    Manon Of The Spring
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers ('78)
    The Apartment

these are among the worst offenders to me.

Agreed, but these two are only part of a bigger disappointment that pretty much includes every foreign film MGM released.

I'll settle for an anamorphic widescreen copy of "Child's Play". I'd be ecstatic if it were to ever happen. I want to pick up the remaining "Child's Play" films, but the collection would feel incomplete since I refuse to buy the current release of the original.

    "Red Dawn" 1984

I haven’t brought the DVD region 2 version as of yet, but I do have a copy of it VHS PAL, P&S, Dolby Stereo 4:2:4, the mix as got a slight low frequency clicking sound when there’s quite scenes, this only registers on the sub bass, but there is a another problem the lack of dynamic range and reinforcement of weaponry effects, or explosions, which need threatening impact! To make it standout to some of today’s standards, or some of the best Dolby Stereo mixes of the past.

So yes I’d like to see a 5.1 mix, with all the original sound work that was put into the film back in the early 1980’s, but with threatening impact!

The 35mm prints are full-frame, but the film appears to be framed for 1.66.

I'd like to add an Anamorphic transfer & 5.1 on How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Would love extras, but will be VERY happy to get a better transfer even on a bare-bones disc.

LIFEFORCE is a guilty pleasure that needs a 16:9 upgrade, and PIT AND THE PENDULUM also needs a 16:9 upgrade.

Misery - current disc is non-anamorphic with no extras and horrid cover art. Should be a 16x9 SE with this cover http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Overboard - current disc is non-anamorphic, needs 16x9 and extras would be nice. Maybe a commentary with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
Phantasm - already loaded with extras, but is unfortunately, non-anamorphic. Needs 16x9 enhancement.
    Runaway Train - non-anamorphic

Does Sony now own Planet of the Vampires? Because this is one film that really needs a special edition.

Would love to see an anamorphic transfer of my favorite all-time film: THE MIRACLE WORKER.

I believe MGM/Sony no longer controls PHANTASM. Which is why the DVD went OOP.

An anamorphic release of "The Taking of Pelham 1,2.3". And another vote for an anamorphic release of "The Miracle Worker".

    Absolutely, Remo Williams and certainly
The Taking of the Pelham 1,2,3

To this day I don't know what the hell got into
MGM when they decided to do a fullscreen release
    of Remo.

There are a lot of good suggestions in this thread, as usual.

However, two I didn't see, which immediately popped into my head were:

Mr. Mom (w/ a new anmorphic widescreen transfer)

    and

The Killer Elite (w/ a new anmorphic widescreen transfer)

Quite the combo there, huh? I would prefer these not be a double-feature. [IMG]
