Back when Ponyo was released on Blu-ray in March, Disney indicated that they would hold off on re-releasing Miyazaki's other animated films in the United States until they were remastered and released in Japan first by Studio Ghibli. Well that time has come and gone - 1984's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was released on Blu-ray in Japan on July 14th, 2010. I'm really hoping we get this disc released in the US, as it's one of my favorite Miyazaki films - not to mention it features two of my favorite Captains - Picard and Adama (aka Patrick Stewart and Edward James Olmos) acting opposite each other in the English dub. I was hopeful that this would get a fall release stateside but haven't heard a peep from Disney. Miyazaki's earlier film (and his theatrical directorial debut) was 1979's Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. Disney doesn't have distribution rights to this film in America but I believe a Japanese Blu-ray exists for it as well, but at 1080i resolution. Now, I suppose I could import Nausicaä and Cagliostro from Japan (since both countries are Region A) but who knows if English dubs and/or English subtitles are included? Besides, I'd rather support the US releases.
