I was wondering whether it would be worht it for me to upgrade my current low end system. Right now I don't have a subwoofer and am instead using floor speakers for my front ones. They have 10" woofers and go down to 40hz. Will a budget subwoofer improve low end responce dramatically? Also, would using bookshelf speakers that I can pplace higher also make a big difference in terms of sound quality?

You can put the speakers you have on short stands to raise their level up. Placing your speakers "higher" does not necessarily improve sound, just playing with placement can have a large effect on the sound.
Yes, even a budget sub will likely improve your system's sound, as 40Hz is not really that low. You are probably missing a lot in the bottom octave (40Hz-20Hz), which is the most entertaining part of well recorded movies, IMO. :D

When will you be in a position to get a decent sub? You can get a budget sub now but with Christmas coming :) maybe a decent sub could be a possibility. Just wondering.

Actually, I am at school right now and only get to watch stuff when I go home for the weekend every couple of weeks. I am probably thinking more in terms of during the summer.

Here's my 2 cents:

if you're in school, you probably have to watch your money.

So: I'd say just save up, and get a nicer piece of equipment. You'll eventually have t spend even MORE money down the line when it's time to upgrade AGAIN.

Also, keep an eye out for returned subs at best buy and CC, where someone fored over a mint for a big sub for an apartment, and realized they dont mix. That's how I got my Velodyne sub...
