I win 7 - 2.

For those not in the know, Casa de los Babys is John Sayles' latest film.

Round 1 - Bracket 2

Jim K

The Good the Bad and the Ugly SE
The Great Escape SE
Zatoichi and the Chess Expert
Zatoichi's Vengeance
Zatoichi's Cane-Sword
The Testament of Dr Mabuse (Criterion)
The Enemy Below
Master & Commander: The Far Side of the Word (2-disc SE)
Kill Bill Volume 1
Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed
Lone Wolf & Cub: White Heaven in Hell
Onibaba (Criterion)

vs.

Brad Porter

The Cooler
Northern Exposure: The Complete First Season
Penn & Teller: Bullshit!
Gilmore Girls: The Complete First Season
Fat Man and Little Boy
The Marx Brothers Collection
Charade (Criterion)
Homicide: Life on the Street - The Complete Season 4
The Matrix Revolutions
Futurama: Volume 3
Schindler's List
Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Series (Yearbook Edition)

Going with Brad in a very close one. As a diehard skeptic, P & T: BS gave him the edge, as did the Futurama set.

Made some changes to my list: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and The Great Escape are dropped; Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Six and Ghosts of the Abyss are added.

Charade (Criterion)- Own the OOP Criterion
The Matrix Revolutions - own it
Schindler's List - will own it soon. Forgot it came out
The Cooler - liked it but not enough to buy it
Fat Man and Little Boy - ditto
Penn & Teller: Bullshit! - not a PT fan
The Marx Brothers Collection - haven't seen most of these films in years. Will be renting a few.

I don't collect TV on DVD but here goes
Northern Exposure: The Complete First Season - seen parts of a few episodes.
Gilmore Girls: The Complete First Season - never heard of it
Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Series (Yearbook Edition) - never seen it
Homicide: Life on the Street - The Complete Season 4 - probably seen quite a few episodes. My wife loves these detective shows.
Futurama: Volume 3 - seen a few episodes & liked it but never kept up with it.

I'll vote for Brad so I only have to suffer through 1 round of snipes against my taste in films. :)

Brad Porter with Gilmore Girls & Marx Brothers pushing past Jim K's list.

Just picked up the Beatles Antholgy box set for $45 (I think that was a good price?) :) I guess that would bump off Tomb Raider.

I don't know if I'm supposed to abstain or not, so I'll at least express an opinion

Jim K

Own the prior release - not double dipping at this time
The Good the Bad and the Ugly SE
The Great Escape SE

Waiting for the combination volume 1 and 2
Kill Bill Volume 1

Heard good things, but didn't see it yet
Master & Commander: The Far Side of the Word (2-disc SE)

Zero familiarity with any of these titles. I know, I need to further my knowledge of foreign cinema, but I just don't dig the martial arts genre that much.
Zatoichi and the Chess Expert
Zatoichi's Vengeance
Zatoichi's Cane-Sword
The Testament of Dr Mabuse (Criterion)
The Enemy Below
Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed
Lone Wolf & Cub: White Heaven in Hell
Onibaba (Criterion)

vs.

Brad Porter

The Cooler (This was a blind buy for me - it was OK, but I really disliked the ending)
Northern Exposure: The Complete First Season (One of my favorite series of all time, even though the DVD set is overpriced for the number of episodes / extras)
Penn & Teller: Bullshit! (I held off buying, because I had seen all of the episodes quite recently on Showtime, but in the end my desire to see more money in P&T's pockets encouraging this kind of programming won out)
Gilmore Girls: The Complete First Season (Since I seem to be the only one here who bought this, I can only imagine that most of you are missing one of the truly witty shows on television today. That and Lauren Graham is H-O-T.)
Fat Man and Little Boy (It's been years since I'd seen it and I'm a sucker for this kind of historical thriller - although I thought Enigma was a bit strange)
The Marx Brothers Collection (I had the Image collection, so this was a necessary addition. Now I just need some friends that can appreciate it. As I indicated in my full list, I'm also a Stooges man)
Charade (Criterion) (My 1960's thrillers section needed some new blood. And I needed another Walter Matthau title other than Fail-Safe)
Homicide: Life on the Street - The Complete Season 4 (An incredible television show that was constantly underappreciated, although this season marked a significant turning point in the cast and with the encouragement of event episodes)
The Matrix Revolutions (I didn't see it in theaters, so this was a blind buy to complete the trilogy. It was certainly loud enough.)
Futurama: Volume 3 (Very well produced DVDs of a series that I loved.)
Schindler's List (I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it yet. I don't know what mood I need to be in to really want to watch it, but I figured that I had to own it.)
Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Series (Yearbook Edition) (This one is hands down my favorite series of all time.)

Which brings me to my next question, since Sayles' work has flooded onto DVD recently, I've been wondering which ones I should purchase.

Casa de los babys (2003) Haven't seen it
Sunshine State (2002) Saw it on cable, won't be buying it
Limbo (1999) Own it
Men with Guns (1997) Saw it on cable, will be buying it
Lone Star (1996) Own it
The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) Own it
Passion Fish (1992) Saw parts of it on cable, but not enough to make a judgment.
City of Hope (1991) Haven't seen it
Eight Men Out (1988) Own it
Matewan (1987) Haven't seen it
The Brother from Another Planet (1984) Haven't seen it
Baby, It's You (1983) I've seen it on cable, won't be buying it
Lianna (1983) Haven't seen it
Return of the Secaucus 7 (1980) Haven't seen it

Out of the titles that I have, I probably like Lone Star and Limbo the most, with Eight Men Out coming in third only because I hate baseball.

I've seen about equal numbers from each list, but Brad Porter will get my vote in every round (even if he's going against me) for having the exquisitely good taste to own Homicide, the greatest TV show ever.

Lianna, The Return of the Secaucus Seven, and The Brother from Another Planet can be had pretty cheap. Of the three, I'd say TBFAP is the best bet for a blind buy. City of Hope and Baby It's You aren't on DVD yet. I think I heard that there are music rights issues with the latter.

And I think Henry meant that Matewan is OOP.

Matewan was going to be a blind buy for me when it was orginally released, but the MAR release prevented me from buying it.

I've got all of the other available Sayles' DVDs on my wishlist at DVD Empire, but my self-imposed DVD spending limit of ~$100 per month has already been consumed for June. :frowning:
