I was entering my latest purchases into my DVD database and though Hey, there's an idea for a tourney - the "Last Dozen DVDs You Bought Tournament." :D

It's simple: if you want to participate, just post your name and the last 12 DVDs you bought. We'll be voting on them as a lot - same as in draft voting. If you make it to the next round, you have the option of updating your list if you've made any recent purchases - changing your list could help or hurt your chances but makes for a more dynamic and interesting tourney.

My list is below so we need at least seven other players to get started.

Just wanted to add that I expect some titles to crop up on many lists (I imagine a lot of you bought that silly hobbit movie), but I'd be surprised if any two lists had more than three or four matches which is why I set the number of DVDs at twelve - it's those other movies that'll ultimately be the decision-makers...

Don't know how accurate this is as releases that interest me tend to come in spurts. Anything I've bought more than a month ago & my memories are a bit hazy.

Jim: some good choices there - I've got Mabuse and Onibaba and plan on picking up the M & C set. I've seen a few Zatoichi movies - they're good, but not something I could take a lot of as they all seem the same (or maybe I just haven't seen enough of them).

Tommy included a boxed set which is okay with me.

Yes the films are very formulatic as are most film series (26 in all here).

The better films in the series are the films that explore Zatoichi’s past (usually the earlier films) or the films that break from or play with the standard formula.

If you just want to delve into the very best films then Fight Zatoichi Fight & Zatoichi and the Chess Expert are the most lyrical while Zatoichi and the Chest of Gold is the most cinematic. Honestly there are a couple clunkers, some just average films, but overall there's a higher amount of good to great films in this series. All in all I can't think of a series that sustained this amount of quality overall, the Bond series (which I also enjoy) pales in comparison.

What appeals to me is the main character's Zen-like persona, it's unique blend of comedy/action, excellent performances & great period detail. Of course you have to able to suspend disbelief to watch a film about a blind swordsman/masseur/degenerate gambler. :)

I don't know - that's a damn good list. I've got them all except 3 Women, Double Suicide, and Good Morning (all three of which I'd like to have). :)

I think Kitano's new Zatoichi film will finally get a US theatrical release in June. It's also playing the June Atlanta film festival.

Devil and Daniel Webster and Testament of Dr. Mabuse will be on my fall birthday/Christmas list along with Scenes From A Marriage and maybe the MGM Bergman box. I already had the R2 Smiles of a Summer night so I didn't get the Crit. I may end up getting Master and Commander as I liked it quite a bit. Plus DVD would let me skip the clunker lizard explorer scenes.

I guess it's no surprise that I already owned half of Lew's list and no more than 2 of anyone else's.

I'll give this one a go. It will take me a while to get my list together, but I'll try to have it up by tonight if that's cool. I'll just make a placeholder below this.

Is it okay if I just leave my list at eleven? I honestly don't have the slightest clue which DVD would round out the dozen, I can't remember back that far and don't organize receipts or anything.

(Hey I saw it at WalMart for $5 and thought it might be good for shits and giggles)
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life

With acception of Alias and Accidental Tourist, these are all pretty much discs at boght at my local used store for about $5-$7, so I took some chances, which I can't even comment on as I still have not watched all them. For some reason I just have not had much interest in buying dvds in the last 6 months.

The Samurai movies are part of the Samurai Trilogy box set. If you want to include the box set as one, the two other most recent DVD's I purchased are Brazil (criterion) and Fargo.

EDIT: Whoops, missed some.

I'm Arman! I'm a former Buy Buy Buy Unseen DVD Addict. Now, I'm simply a See-Lot-of-Movies Addict! Here's my last 12 (from expensive box-sets bought online at the same time, ... bargain 3 for $25 sale in Hollywood Video, ... forgetting to decline/return Columbia House DVD director selection/purchase req't (The Matrix Reloaded which I gave to a friend), ... down to Wal-mart's $5 bin's Legends of the Silver Screen. Legends of the Silver Screen is so far the only DVD I bought this year. I'm really cheap lately and feel like need to do some dvd bargain hunting after this post. I missed it! :D :
