Received SUGARFOOT Season 3 today, and have another crossover to report, in the season 3 opening episode: Bret Maverick is on a wanted poster in the background, a couple of times. "Wanted--$500 Reward", for Prison Break.The third episode includes a scenes for next week promo for Bronco, which rotated with Sugarfoot on Tuesdays. Cheyenne was on Mondays at this point rotating with Shirley Temple Theater.
Was the way that the WB seemed to weave it's western characters around to other series in cross overs or even small appearances unusual for that time period on TV??
The Warner westerns and detective shows were more famous for crossovers but it happened on other shows sometimes. One I remember is where Dwayne Hickman appeared as a fraternity brother, to David Nelson on Ozzie and Harriet. Hickman's character name was "Chuck" and talked about his uncle. Hickman was "Chuck", nephew of the Bob Cummings character, on "Love That Bob/The Bob Cummings Show". Both O&H and LTBob were filmed at the same studio facility.
At some point some of the sponsers of the Warner shows began to complain about the crossovers. ABC could charge more money for the commercial time during more successful WB shows. So the sponsers that paid the big bucks for the top rated WB shows felt they were being cheated when the stars of "their" shows appeared on the less popular WB shows, which had cheaper commercial time rates.
