State Fair (1962) Blu-ray Review
statefairtop.jpg

Having already won viewers’ hearts in the early 1930s as a Will Rogers comedy vehicle and in the lavish 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical adaptation, the 1962 remake of State Fair offers a very starry cast, most of the tuneful melodies from the first musical version plus a few new tunes that aren’t half bad, and a sparkling production that tries to add a little spice to the homemade brew of the first musical.

The song you call You're Mine, You're mine is actually called This Isn't Heaven
I've always had a soft spot for this film.
Some songs from the original, that were performance songs are now story songs. (That for Me).
Pat boone is very good and Ann Margret is awesome.
The year after this she plays the teen virgin types in Bye Bye Birdie and pulled that off.

Yes, the correct title was mentioned in the State Fair featurette on the disc, and I didn't change it to the correct title in my notes before I started writing. I'll do that now.

It looks great -- the sound has a huge, bassy, clean power to it. This is a very good film. I like it much better than the 1945 version which to me is unwatchable and dull. I love how in this version the young lady seems like a little hussy and the mother knows it and keeps giving her suspicious looks. Ann-Margret of course is outstanding and Pat Boone is very convincing and sings beautifully. It's fun to see Dallas as it was two years before the Kennedy assassination nearby. Twilight Time once again pulls out all the stops and gives us the ultimate edition.
