It is hard to believe that Lucas does not own the rights to the Holiday Special. If someone else owned it, wouldn't they have released it by now to cash in on nostalgic Star Wars fans?
On Fox News Channel (IIRC) they showed a clip from the Holiday Special on its 25th anniversary (last November).
Smith-Hemion owns the rights - but I guess Lucas would have to sign off on it because clips and characters from Star Wars (which he does own) are used. It's a shame, because I think it's highly underrated. And count me as one of the few who would rather watch this again instead of Episode II. Plus, the Holiday Special is not nearly as cheesy as much of the added stuff from the Special Editions.
