SYNOPSIS
BLACK HAWK DOWN
From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (The Martian) and renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Pearl Harbor) comes the gripping true story about bravery, camaraderie and the complex reality of war.
BLACK HAWK DOWN stars an exceptional cast including Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor and Eric Bana. In 1993, an elite group of American Rangers and Delta Force soldiers are sent to Somalia on a critical mission to capture a violent warlord whose corrupt regime has led to the starvation of hundreds of thousands of Somalis. When the mission goes quickly and terribly wrong, the men find themselves outnumbered and literally fighting for their lives.

THE GUNS OF NAVARONE
Academy Award®-winners Gregory Peck (1962, Best Actor, To Kill A Mockingbird), David Niven (1958, Best Actor, Separate Tables), and Anthony Quinn (1952, Best Supporting Actor, Viva Zapata!; 1956, Lust For Life) star as a team of Allied military specialists recruited for a dangerous but imperative mission: to infiltrate a Nazi-occupied fortress and disable two long-range field guns so that 2,000 trapped British soldiers may be rescued. Faced with an unforgiving sea voyage, hazardous terrain, and the possibility of a traitor among them, the team must overcome the impossible without losing their own lives. Adapted by screenwriter Carl Foreman from Alistair MacLean’s best-selling novel, THE GUNS OF NAVARONE was nominated for seven Oscars®, including Best Picture, and won for Best Special Effects (1961).

I never upgraded Black Hawk Down to 4K so this new edition will be a definite pickup but I'm torn on Guns of Navarone. How much more detail can be wrung out of the source(s) they have, which, from what I understand, aren't in the best condition? I guess I'll wait for reviews to see if a double dip is warranted. This is one of my favorite war films but I gotta draw a line somewhere.

Itunes has already updated the digital Black Hawk Down with Dolby Vision. Not sure if it was always that way or if not, when it was upgraded. I don't have Guns of Navarone on digital so I can't say if it has Dolby Vision on iTunes.

Black Hawk Down has been Dolby Vision for a long time. Guns doesn’t have any HDR on iTunes.

By the way, MA nor Vudu has any HDR on the 4K digital of The Guns of Navarone. Another streaming failure! Perhaps that will change with this upcoming 4K/UHD release.

I have the previous 4K HDR release. Revisiting the review it seems that Dolby Vision probably won’t add very much is my take.

Since they’re releasing an upgraded Guns of Navarone, maybe they’ll finally get around to releasing Carl Foreman’s “ The Victors”.

I doubt it considering this is the second 4K/UHD release of The Guns of Navarone.

will it be possible that Columbia working on restoration with AI on "coloring" for new-age release?
...perhaps on "manufactured" audio as well?

Black Hawk Down has always had Dolby Vision/Atmos on Apple. Navarone has only been 4K SDR 5.1. Fingers crossed that it will finally get some HDR this time around.

Be aware if buying used the new Dolby Vision disc of TGON has the same disc art as the previous release even the copyright dates and disc # of 6113251 is the same. The color is more saturated on my Dolby Vision disc label compared to the older disc.

I guess I'm missing something, but I'll be damned if I can tell the difference between Dolby Vision and HDR 10. Maybe if I had identical, calibrated sets side-by-side there would be a visible difference, but whenever I've tried switching back and forth, they look the same.

I sure can. On Vertigo and a few others. I thought the DV had an orange tint and a very harsh image. While the HDR-10 looked perfect to my eyes.
