My girlfriend's Apex dvd player handles layer changes beautifully. She got it for free with her school ring, so just go to PSU for 4 years, drop $550 on a ring and you'll be set. It's funny/annoying how some features you demand for your $600 purchase and still don't have them show up on $50 products.

My question is how big do you need the buffer to be for a seamless layer change? I've seen them from 2-8MB. Would the 8MB be overkill for worrying about layer changes?

I'm not really sure, I guess it depends on how fast the laser can refocuse on the new layer. The slower this process is the bigger the buffer needs to be. I know the Denon 2900 uses an 8MB buffer and it has seamless layer changes. The 900 uses a 2MB buffer and it still suffers from layer change pauses. Some players may not require as large of one as the 2900 and some will.
