Let’s dig into Red Dragon. After his first novel Black Sunday (1975 – which, of course, got adapted into a movie by John Frankenheimer), author Thomas Harris created his most enduring character in his second novel, Red Dragon (1981). The character, a killer psychiatrist named Hannibal Lecter, quickly found his way to Hollywood, where maverick producer Dino De Laurentiis and director Michael Mann first brought his exploits to life in Manhunter (1986, adapted from Red Dragon) before Jonathan Demme struck gold with The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Anthony Hopkins became closely associated with Lecter. A decade lull followed before De Laurentiis and director Ridley Scott revived the franchise with Hannibal (2001); the year after that, Brett Ratner revisited the Red Dragon novel and gave his take on the source material under its original name...
