As for Mr Scott, one has to understand the pressure on the director, the compromises he as to take, and his hope to get this made after a full year or more of development.
One also has to understand that there is a destination in the development of any film by a director with taste and discretion- a line- at which the artistic rewards left to be had for "completion" of the film are so compromised and defeated that there is no longer an incentive to complete it, as possible, and, in fact, a growing incentive to not make it. When your product becomes self-parody, it can do more harm to your cause to see it through in that state.

Sure, he shot it as it was studio approved and played ball, but all the real problems originate from Lindeloff participation only.
And the buck stops where? I'm no fan of Lindelof's product, but let's not unduly ascribe him any real power in this affair.

Jon Spaihts original script is online, and has none of the illogic things and stupid things in the final movie. It's all Lindeloff fault. As for Mr Scott, one has to understand the pressure on the director, the compromises he as to take, and his hope to get this made after a full year or more of development. Sure, he shot it as it was studio approved and played ball, but all the real problems originate from Lindeloff participation only.
As someone who has read that Spaihts draft, it's very clear that a lot of the problems that people had with the script (particularly from the characterization standpoint) were present in his draft. He confirmed it was genuine. Go ahead and read it yourself. If anything, Lindelof's draft resulted in a decidedly lateral move.
