i played my sub without the flared port today and it sounded much louder. the air comes out from the hole where the port is supposed to be is more violent than when the port is in place. is this normal? i'm a newbie so i don't know how to explain this. thanks for your inputs.

you still have a port with that hole....it is just a really high tunning now. Your sub now doesn't play as low as it could and you now have a very large peak in the upper bass.
