Original Six Big-Screen Adventures Also Arrive on 4K Ultra HD September 6
in Time for Star Trek Day

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – Set a course for the final frontier as the newly restored Star Trek: The Motion Picture—The Director’s Edition arrives September 6, 2022 on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray™ with a bonus Blu-ray Disc™ filled with new and legacy special features from Paramount Home Entertainment. The film will also be released in a Limited-Edition Collector’s Set entitled “The Complete Adventure,” which includes the new Director’s Edition, the theatrical cut, and a special longer cut all on 4K Ultra HD along with special features on Blu-ray. In addition, Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection will arrive on September 6 with all six big-screen adventures featuring the original series crew on 4K Ultra HD.

Originally released in 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture became the fourth highest grossing movie of the year and earned three Academy Award® nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Music, Original Score. The film successfully launched the Star Trek franchise beyond the original television series, despite having been rushed to theaters with incomplete special effects and forced editing choices.

In 2001, director Robert Wise revisited the film to refine the edit and enhance the visual effects. His updated vision was released on DVD in standard definition and embraced by fans but has never been available in higher definition until now. Meticulously assembled and restored by producer David C. Fein with post-production supervisor Mike Matessino, both of whom originally collaborated with Wise, the film has been prepared for presentation in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision™ high dynamic range (HDR) and a new powerful and immersive Dolby Atmos® soundtrack.* Fein and Matessino assembled a team of visual effects experts, led by returning visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman, and utilized the extensive resources in the Paramount Archives to recreate the effects not just in HD, but in Ultra HD. After more than six months of painstaking work, the updated movie looks and sounds better than ever while staying true to Wise’s original intention.

“The Director’s Edition on 4k Ultra HD delivers an experience that is far more intimate, engaging, and powerful thanks to the hard work of everyone involved,” said Fein. “In building The Complete Adventure, we appreciated that many people who were first introduced to the film through the full frame release of the ‘Special Longer Version’ have missed it. I’m excited that it will now be available for the first time in widescreen 4k Ultra HD. After so many years, it’s deeply rewarding to finally deliver Robert Wise’s definitive Director’s Edition for fans to enjoy at home.”

Following is an overview of the new product offerings:

Thanks Ron for the press release!

Woah, so they kept it quiet and I think if I read it right, they really did it. The Complete Adventures Set sounds like it’s what everyone has been wanting to see for decades. The 4K theatrical cut, the special longer cut that aired on ABC but now in 4K and the 4K Directors Edition! I’ll be going for that edition, but if it’s got some special features and is a special box set, it sounds expensive! But I’ll go for it as it sounds like it’s what we’ve been waiting for.

Then if I read it right, if we want Star Trek 5 and 6 in 4K, we need to buy the complete film series set. Or buy them as individual releases. Over the weekend, during the podcast with David Fein, he said he couldn’t say anything about the new releases.

This confirms the rumors, but the huge surprise is the inclusion of the ABC longer cut! Can’t wait!

I was just thinking, if the Motion Picture Special Longer Version is in a separate disc that includes the Theatrical cut too, I wonder if the disc has enough room to fit both films and retain quality. I wondered if the Special Longer version is perhaps not as good quality as the theatrical and DE versions. I’m not going to worry about, just glad it’s finally here.

If I read the press release correctly, the "special longer edtion" TV cut is only included in the "box of junk" limited edtion which currently is selling for $98 for the one film. This is the first time this version is wide screen instead of 4:3. I know the price will go down but unless it goes down at least 80% I will not be buying that version of this release.

I am assuming the 2nd to 4th films include all the same content as included in last year's first 4 films box set.

Wow! So, if I am reading this correctly, in order to get the even longer broadcast cut you have to opt for the $98 deluxe set and that's just the first film.

No thanks. I'd rather spend nearly $30 more to get all 6 films.

Then again, I have all 6 films on digital. I think they are 4k and should be upgraded to new transfers at the time of this release. So, perhaps just buy the first film in the deluxe set. Have a lot to think about.

That box set of TMP is pretty much everything we have ever wanted or asked for. That said, there are a few questions. 1) Why do we have to rebuy 1-4 in the box set of the six films? Why not a complement to last year's box? 2) Do the extras from the TMP box carry over to the 6-film box? 3) Is the only exclusive to the TMP box the "special longer version"? 4) Will we miss any bonus material (other than the "special longer version") if we go with the individual 6 films? Are any of the bonus materials exclusive to the 6-film set?

Credit to Paramount for going big with this, but there was a way to do this without stepping on the fans who bought last year's set.

I neither want nor need yet another "box of junk" edition of a movie just for a special cut. I'll either be happy with the "Director's Edition" or just wait for the inevitable release of all 3 versions, if not just a stand-alone of the extended TV edition, without the added "collectible junk."

Any possibility of individual steel books? Or would they have been announced with the rest?

I suspect if Paramount’s history is any indication that these will be repackaged in multiple configurations many times. It looks like Indiana Jones steel books started coming a year after the set first came out so I wouldn’t bet against that.

Im just getting 5 and 6 since I have the first four Trek films in the UHD box set. I have to draw the line somewhere and not keep buying the same titles over and over and over and over and over again :)

If it were 10 or 20 years ago the box of junk set would have shown up at Costco for $20 or $30 within a year of release. They couldn't give away the box sets of the 10 Commandments, The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, and Gone With The Wind among other "limited editions"

I didn’t see that Amazon link earlier. I just checked it out, the Star Trek The Motion Picture Complete Adventure box set. The box o’junk edition. Some of the junk looks like we’ll intentioned. The use of the David Kimble cut away of the Enterprise is a great poster from the time and a I still have mine! The use of the Robert McCall concept art in that book is cool too. The bumper stickers I can do without, but I get why it’s there, this was a nostalgic move because at that time, the Fans were clamoring for Star Trek to come back.

I know it’s pricey and I know it’s buying the movie again. But this one is finally what we wanted. And Josh, my impression from looking at the box is that both the 4K and blu ray discs are included. But I’ll wait and see to find more precise specs. Unless the blu ray is just the special features. This is a special release. It would be cool if the discs are in Steelbook. But I can go for this. And then I’ll probably pick up Star Trek 5 and 6 separately. But who knows maybe I’ll get the other box set. This is a special moment where we are really finally getting the Blade Runner treatment.

Nope. Disc 1 is directors edition in UHD. Disc 2 is theatrical and special longer version branched in on UHD disc. Disc 3 is special features on a Blu-ray Disc.

Only way to get special longer version is on UHD.

I'll be buying both the Box of Junk and the Complete Adventures set.

We all knew this was coming. Frankly, I think that in other threads the forum members were far too charitable to Paramount. Bundling 1-4 and presenting them as some sort of "iconic" tetralogy was disingenuous at the very least. It should have been 1-6 from the start. If 5 and 6 weren't finished at the time, then fine: release 1-4 individually (and only individually).

But the 1-4 box set was totally uncool. The powers-that-be always planned on a 1-6 box.

But what's done is done. I'm glad I didn't buy the 1-4 box. Now I can buy both new releases (as soon as they are available Canada, that is...).

As an aside, is there a way that HTF can get "credit" for my purchases through Amazon Canada? Routing through Ron's links and then logging into my Canadian account kills the referral.
