I hear a lot of people saying it's more kiddie, but I hear no reasons. Again, is it simply because it had a little girl in it? Because I'll say it again. Toy Story had a little boy and his toys. How is that less kiddie than Monsters Inc? Just looking for some reasoning as to why some thought it was kiddie and Toy Story wasn't.

But since it doesn't open until THIS friday I doubt Fox has to worry.
Ah, thanks for the correction. Ok, but thats even more reason in my mind for any FOX executives who are upset to get a grip. So Star Wars is supposed to just sit on its laurels and wait for FOX to put out something? Seems to me Star Wars is best served by putting a trailer in front of any and all movies that have a chance to be blockbusters, and Shallow Hal isn't it.
FOX might be basically giving away distribution fees... but anyone who thinks Lucas *owes* FOX for this is sorely mistaken. FOX certainly didn't reduce rates because they are such nice people (although I'm certain some of them are... but from a business standpoint charity certainly had best not play a role). Rather FOX wants their name associated with Star Wars. Any Star Wars film is certainly going to be a big hit, and I'd bet most studios would be paying money to have the chance to be associated with it.

I saw Monsters, Inc. at a matinee
on Sunday.
This movie took me to places the other Pixar
films have not: it made my eyes well up with
tears. I think this film is not as funny as their
earlier work, but it was also more touching.
I plan to see it again, and again.

Let us not forget that Hollywood is a business. No mater what we think or believe. That means attaching a trailer on a movie that would give it the most exposure.
Let’s also not forget that the “Star Wars” movies have changed. I saw the 1st one when I was 7 years old. My brother took me. He was 22 years old. We both loved it. It was for all age groups. The new ones are for kids. It’s just like the tobacco companies, “Get them while there young.” This is why the trailer or really a teaser was placed with Monsters Inc. and not Shallow Hal.

It's already been established that Lucas's close relationship with Pixar (a former division of Lucasfilm) is why they got the AOTC trailer. Also, the prequels (yes even TPM) still are designed to appeal to grownups and kids.

Is it possible that "Boo" is the little sister from the Toy Story movies? I could be totally off, but just an idea.

Also, in case you're wondering, Boo is not Emily (Jessie's former owner in TS2) either. Emily had red hair.

I was wondering that myself. I did notice that little Jessie doll and so did people in the audience. I just heard a big "aaaaahhhhh" when she was on screen for a brief moment.
Richard said she had red hair in toy story.
Unless there was a second little sister?

Are you saying that you not get even a little misty eyed at Jessie's Song from Toy Story 2?
I didn't. I was too busy being perplexed that they stole a song from "Ernest Goes to Camp"... :)

I saw Monster Inc. today and enjoyed it. Sure it was not of the calibur of Toy Story 1 and 2, but does that make it not worth seeing? No. How on earth can you expect Pixar to pull of TS-like movies at every turn? That's just not practical.
However, their latest venture did offer enough enjoyment to fill its small running time and make the whole experience worth my $7.
If you can manage to disentangle your nonrealistic expectations from this Pixar movie, I'm sure you'll find a lot that you'll enjoy.

I checked the search and couldn't find a thread dedicated to Monsters Inc., I'm sure there was one back then that has since expired, so I wanted to start another.
I finally sat down and watched this last night for the first time. I saw Bug's Life and the Toy Stories in the theater but just didn't get around to Monsters or Nemo (which I saw a few months ago).
I've got to say that this movie was terrific. I wanted to restart the Monsters Inc conversation strictly hoping that a new parent or two would read this and go out and watch it. The story and humor were absolutely priceless, but the thing that really stood out to me as a new parent was how touching it was. This movie really felt special, I'll drop a spoiler or two here to say what I mean:
When Boo shows Sully a picture of Randall to explain why she's afraid of the closet, I just had one of those "Ah" moments. The same thing happened again later when Sully scared Boo in the simulation room -- I can see my daughter's face in my head, and the first time she was startled and I could tell she was scared. :frowning: If you're a parent, you know what I mean.

I think if I saw this movie when it came out, or even last year, I would have really enjoyed it. But now that I'm a parent, this movie really moved me... um, in a macho, grunt grunt way.... yeah.... um, OK, it made me feel good and kinda sad and happy at the same time, so sue me.
If you haven't seen it, watch it, it was truly great. (And if you can watch it on an HD set like mine, go for it, it looks AWESOME!)

seriously, it is definitely a great kids movie. Boo just gets to me :)
And the rain of physical gags in the "Hide Boo in the Apartment" scene had me laughing REALLY hard for a REALLY long time.

Yeah, it's dead. Links to it in locked threads don't work.

This is still probably my favorite Pixar movie. Loved Toy Story and TS2 but I guess the excitement factor of those has started to wear off. I enjoyed Finding Nemo but put it behind the Toy Stories and tie with A Bug's Life for their poorest movies. (not that either are poor, it's just all relative ;) )
I'll have to wait until I see The Incredibles again before I see if it replaces Monster's Inc as my favorite but it is in the top 2 for sure.
I'll admit the very end always gets me choked up...again in that...macho...grunt grunt way. :b
The animation was also top notch. The scene with Sully in the snow is breathtaking. Still disappointed that Shrek got the oscar over it.
On a technical note, the scene were Boo laughs is what I always use as an audio demo. The whole movie though is vibrant in the A/V department.

Going back through the past posts, I think Phil's review (post #50 and #60) summed it up for me; like Phil said, it made my wife and I want to hug our daughter. Our daughter mysteriously "woke up" after the movie (I think my wife probably woke her up :)) so we both took the opportunity to give her a squeeze.
I do think it's interesting that reading the reviews, I didn't see a single negative review from a parent. Did I miss one in there?
