Sorry about the caps in the title, spaced it. I used to be a major stereo enthusiast, but that was when i was working and long before home theaters. Since, I was forced to go on permanent disability and don't get much. It has been a long time since i've bought a stereo. It took years for my disability to go through and it really screwed my credit and I lost everything. Well, anyway, I was satisfied with my stereo I had for a long time before having to lose it. But I am in the market very soon to buy a home theater system and it has been so long, I don't know if prices have come down, what is the best quality, etc. and that is where I need the sincere advice. I don't have a lot of money and craigslist is a gamble but possible.
About 7 years ago, I went to a stereo store and saw a beautiful Bose surround sound system but back then it was about $2,500...;out of my range. Could anyone tell me if they know of any reputable sites to buy nice home theatre systems that are very inexpensive or reconditioned etc. l lost everything while waiting on disability. I am in Indiana. I will be moving soon into a pretty average size 1 bedroom apartment (so the living room won't be all that big), but I need to replace everything..furniture, bed, etc. so I need to be very frugal but don't want to get screwed either. Could someone tell me some of the nicer wireless home theater systems (speakers and receiver/DVD etc. and possibly with a flat screen TV? And being in probably a 500 sq. ft. living room, it doesn't have to blow you away, but I'd like it to sound good and crank it without distortion and have the receiver be able to play DVDs burned from my computer and maybe even play CDs as well. I really don't want to spend much over $800 or so...I know that sounds crazy, but where could I look and what would be the best brands. In my day, before home theater systems, the high end stereos/speakers were: Bose; Bang & Olfson; JBL; Yamaha; etc. But I don't know what is good these days and how much they run. I don't want any beginner piece of crap you can get for a couple hundred bucks from Fingerhut, I'd like something nice but reasonably priced and warranty. Small but blow away speakers either on stands or wall mounted wireless and reciever that plays DVDs burned from computer and plays CDs and could be 5.1 or 7.1.....I really don't know what's 'in' these days.

And as far as a TV, I am in the market for a flat screen very reasonably priced (wall mounted would be nice), size I don't know. Considering the size of my apartment, something maybe over 32" to 40" or so that works well with the theater system (and maybe even hook it up to my computer would be nice or with bluetooth or MIDI (whatever it's called) connector to the tv/stereo.

Could someone please guide me to the right place. I can no longer work, am very sick and this is the last time I will have any money to replace everything I've lost.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you again.

Hi, Steve, welcome to HTF! We're glad you are here!
I don't have a lot of answers for you, but I have seen advice along the lines you are requesting.
First thing I would recommend is that you avoid Bose, especially since you are on a budget. There are speaker systems and receivers that are much, much cheaper that are higher quality.
I see lots of comments about receivers from Denon and Pioneer, and speakers from Parts Express. You might want to look there.
Also, your computer would either output VGA, DVI, or HDMI. The TV's these days use HDMI. So do most receivers.
Regards,
Steve

Hey Steve, I thought your thread would get more visibility in this section of the forum, where I have seen a lot of similar questions, so I suggested to a mod that it be moved here. I hope that's okay!

Fingerhut! Haven't heard of them in years!
I'm about to leave the house (should have already) so I'm putting this together pretty quickly.
Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer, Onkyo, Harman Kardon. They're all pretty good. Sony, Sherwood, house brands. Keep looking. No offence intended, I'm just saying...
I don't know much about wireless speakers so I can't help you there :( .
Also avoid the all-in-one home theater in a boxes (htib). Low performance and un-reliable.
I've bought and sold a ton of things on CL and it is a gamle but so far things have gone very well. Met a ton of nice people along the way. If you were local to me (S.F. Bay Area) I could probably hook you up with a good system just from some stuff I have laying around the house.
Look for factory refurbished items from ac4l.com. The Onkyo HT-S8400 doesn't have wireless speakers (maybe there's an after-market wireless adapter thingy you can buy?) but it does have a high-quality receiver and the speakers aren't that bad for the price. http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKHTS8400/Onkyo-HT-S8400-7.1-Network-Theater-Package-w/ipod-dock/1.html
Also check for clearance items from Vanns.com http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/clearance
Newegg.com is another place that seems to have great deals on various products. http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category.aspx?Category=31&name=Home-Audio and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882269038 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882325104.
An Onkyo receiver/speaker package and a good BluRay player from Panasonic, Samsung, LG, etc. would make a nice system for an apartment. Want something better? A Denon receiver, Boston Acoustics or Energy speaker system (or Polk monitors from Newegg.com) and one of those BluRay players would be pretty good indeed. Something like this Denon 1712 http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/DENAVR1712/DENON-AVR-1712-7.1-A/V-Surround-Receiver/1.html and any combination of these speakers you want http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=100006922&isNodeId=1&Description=monitor&x=13&y=13
