My father is wanting to replace his old 8 inch Paradigm sub with something with more bass. He uses it probably 50/50 music and home theater so neither is probably more important. A couple of questions, reading on HSU website, trying to get a grasp on the difference between the VTF and the STF series. I think he wants to keep it $350 or less if possible. I'm not certain of the measurements of his room, but I'd say it's probably pretty good size, he has a dining area that is open to the family room where it is set up. So he is trying to fill a fairly large area with bass.

Along those same lines, he is looking for quite alot more bass (I don't think getting something very clean and accurate is enormously important to him, he's looking for more thump, but I don't want to suggest something that is going to sound poorly for music either if you catch my drift since he uses it for so much music).

What of these do you think would be very good for his situation.

I don't know much about BIC America, but this is a good price it seems..

Those are some lofty goals for such a small price. On the other hand, most of the subs you picked are pretty darn good. I'll immediately rule out the Hsu due to it being a 10" sub and the Klipsch because it's a Klipsch.

The next one off the list is the eD A3S - 250. Not because it's a bad sub but because it is sealed and sealed subs are less efficient down low. You need as much efficiency as possible for such a large space.

The BIC and Lava are the current kings in their price ranges. The Lava is 15% less if you get their HTF discount. Based on that, if you can up the budget just a little more dual Lava 10's would be killer. You would have as much cone area as a 15" sub. If you can't up the budget then it's a toss up. The only way to get more bass is go DIY. There are numerous threads where I've helped people so you won't go into it completely blind. Make it a father/son project.

Thanks Robert, I really trust your advise on these things. Is the BIC or the Lava going to be a fairly large step up from a 7 year old

Paradigm pdr-8?

Subs are all about moving air. Both the BIC and Lava have larger piston diameters and more excursion than the 8" driver in the Paradigm.
