Wild card

"Nessun dorma"
from Puccini's Turandot
as performed by Pavarotti, from the Decca recording by Sutherland, Parvarotti, LPO, Mehta (1971)

Not the bravest choice from opera, I know, but still an essential performance.

Sorry to hold things up.

Nessun dorma!
Nessun dorma!
Tu pure, o Principe,
Nella tua fredda stanza guardi le stelle,
Che tremano d'amore e di speranza!

...

Dilegua, o notte!
Tramontate, stelle!
All'alba vincerò!

Very find choice Angelo.

I thought of going with an all-opera theme, but chose CW & folk as a more accessible alternative.

Ma il mio mistero é chiuso in me,
Il nome mio nessun saprà!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò
Quando la luce splenderà!

Thanks, Lew. It's become Pavarotti's theme song, I suppose, and I love it dearly. The Sutherland et al recording of Turandot is my favorite, even though Sutherland herself is not completely my cup of tea, and not my ideal lead in Turandot.

Funny, I considered an all-opera theme as well; also, an all-showtunes theme and an all-classical theme. Bring on Music Draft III!

Sorry to keep everybody waiting.

It's going to work like this:
1 vs. 8
4 vs. 5
3 vs. 6
2 vs. 7

Unless somebody knows of the right way of doing it, I'll start this thing sometime tomorrow.

Angelo, based on The Smiths, Sgt. Pepper, and Dark Side

George has a number of bands I've never heard of, and outside of the 60's picks I'm almost completely unfamiliar with the music. Maybe I should just abstain

I’ll abstain, but Rob has a fine list and nicely diverse. Great pick with the Etta James song. And The Temptations—and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Good stuff on both lists (though I've never been able to stomach Journey), but looks like Lew gets the edge.
