Not to mention Muppet Treasure Island came out a year later and was one of the higher-grossing Muppet movies at the time. I don't think audiences were anti-pirate, they just didn't want to see Cutthroat Island.

Studio execs are demented. This is akin to Disney deciding not to release John Carter as John Carter of Mars, or under the novel's title A Princess of Mars, because they apparently assumed that the floppage of Mars Needs Moms was due to people not wanting to see films with "Mars" in the title.

(Personally, I would've preferred the title the novel had in its original magazine serialization: Under the Moons of Mars.)
