I find this tidbit from Cutthroat Island's Wikipedia page hilarious because it implies that there were a whole boatload [pun intended] of pirate-themed movies being made before this one flopped:

It is listed in the Guinness World Records as the biggest box-office bomb of all time, and significantly reduced the bankability and Hollywood production of pirate-themed films until 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Not to mention Muppet Treasure Island came out a year later and was one of the higher-grossing Muppet movies at the time. I don't think audiences were anti-pirate, they just didn't want to see Cutthroat Island.

Odd choice... I own a copy on DVD. It's... OK... but nothing special. I've only watched that disc once and feel no need to upgrade. I purchased it solely to see Geena Davis in a pirate costume...

If I'm not mistaken, this year is Stargate's 30th anniversary, so I wouldn't be surprised if it turns up at some point.

Tried to watch "CutThroat Island" a few times over the years but, alas...always got strangely so bored, then cut it off early. Always thought Geena Davis didn't work here in this 1995 film, carefully directed by Renny Harlin, both of whom I ordinary like.

However, a Deja vu-whiplashing 1 year later, Davis was terrific in the entertaining 1996's actioner "Long Kiss Goodnight," also directed by Harlin. .......strange.

I saw Cutthroat Island theatrically (much preferred it to Pirates of the Caribbean) and really enjoyed it, Geena Davis is great, plenty of action and a teriffic score. I will upgrade my blu ray to 4k in due course. Stargate is another good film and should be on 4k.

For some reason they have never issued on digital media the original XXX rated version. It's much better. I only saw it once, on a VHS tape I borrowed from a friend. Can't remember who put it out, and haven't seen one for sale. That friend is now deceased. If you have a copy please message me.

Now that is harsh - one man's stinker is another man's masterpiece guilty pleasure

I contemplated watching it a few times but then decided not to as I am not a big fan of pirate movies anyway so why should I watch a big box office failure pirate movie?

So thinking it would never happen anyway I made myself a sneaky promise to watch it only when it is released on UHD disc and now look at this
