Based veeeeery loosely on the biography of real-life Wing Chun martial arts instructor Ip Kai-Man (aka Yip Man).  Ip Man (Donnie Yen) operates the best martial arts dojo in Foshan, in pre-communist China. Both students and masters are always after him to fight them to test their skill.  Ip Man leads a good life, with a beautiful family and the best food and housing. When the Japanese invade during the second Sino-Japanese war, Ip Man and his family lose everything and he is reduced to manual labor.  While Ip Man trains his fellow villagers in Wing Chun to protect themselves from the invaders, many of them are forced to fight each other to feed their families.  When Japanese General Miura kills one of them Ip Man takes on Miura and his army of students single handedly.

Glad you enjoyed it! I can't remember which sequel has Mike Tyson (I think Ip Man 3), but fast and loose with history is a good way to describe the Yen franchise. You might also want to check out the competing films that are a bit more character driven -- The Legend is Born: Ip Man and Ip Man: The Final Fight.
