Hell and High Water Blu-ray Review
hellhighwatertop-1024x576.jpg

A popcorn thriller from the Hollywood studio years, Samuel Fuller’s Hell and High Water offers underwater submarine face-offs and on land action scenes all in the service of a Cold War scenario that’s even more devious and nihilistic than much of the movie pretends.

Just got this one and so far I'm enjoying it. Nice use of CinemaScope, really good pq, and an Alfred Newman score in stereo. Plus Richard Widmark.

And here's a little piece of trivia from wikipedia....

"when Fuller was filming a cameo in Steven Spielberg's 1941, Spielberg showed him that he carried a print of Hell and High Water in the trunk of his car.[5]"

I enjoy this film although it's a bit hard to take seriously. I've always felt that Bella Darvi is better than most people admit, and I don't find her "stiff and robotic" at all.

Would have to agree with you on this. Here she is more than acceptable.
I enjoyed this even as far fetched as it is.
Lovely transfer.

The special effects are pretty good for the era too.

And the special feature of the documentary of Widmark's life is a lot of fun. Nice background info and career overview for this compelling actor.

I'm watching this early CinemaScope movie again tonight.

Enjoyed my re-watch of this B-movie action thriller. Richard Widmark is one of my favorite stars of the 1950s. I prefer movies, like this one, where he plays the hero. Sam Fuller directs this well, and makes good use of CinemaScope, while Alfred Newman provides a rousing score. Julie Kirgo's essay for the Twilight Time release as always is a delight to read.
