If so how is the picture quality.

The picture quality is sub-par. It is from a video master that is so old that it has whiskers. It is extremely soft with lots of both film and video artifacts. Soon after dropping $25 on this poor quality release, I realized that the old VHS tape I had rented from Hollywood Video was in better shape than I had realized - it was just from a poor master.

Beware of the R1 NTSC which seems to 4:3 pan'n'scam!!
Sam Peckinpah has a certain visual style
which will be totally lost in 4:3.
I have the UK R2 PAL which is 1.85:1*anamorphic which
is of acceptable quality.

Cross of Iron is one of my favorite war films so I eagerly dropped $25 for the dvd when it first came out. Boy was I disappointed! Even to my untrained eyes, the disc featured a horrible transfer - yuck! I sold it off a few days later. The bad thing is, I doubt we'll see a re-release unless Anchor Bay gets hold of it. Hmmmm...

Looks like the R2 version is 11 minutes longer at 126 minutes and; "2 different versions were released in Germany - 122 and 132 minutes"
I may get the R2 version if I can't find the Germany 132 minute one or if it isn't in English.

I had a look at my UK R2 PAL again and it has a running
time of 126m59s which is equivalent of 132m17s
when compensating for the 24/25 fps speedup.
According to the book "Crucified Heroes: The Films of
SAM PECKINPAH", the movie had a running of 133m which
could very well mean anything between 132m1s and 133m0s.
According to the BBFC (UK):
- it had a running time of 132m55s when it passed uncut
in 1977 for a cinema release
- it had a running time of 126m58s when it passed uncut
in 1999 for a home video release
According to www.dvdinside.de, the German version
(Steiner - Das Eiserne Kreuz) is not anamorphic,
German DD1.0, no subtitles and has a running time of 125m.
Based on this, I think the UK R2 PAL is the best version
to pick if your setup supports R2 PAL.
