Since some found my "Catch up titles" thread helpful, and since I'm a bit under the weather and have some time to spare, I thought another helpful thread would be to analyze the catalog releases by each of the significant studios.

I'm gonna split the lists by studio, and within each studio there will be two types of catalog listings: films that are between 11-20 years old (1989-1998), and films that are 21+ years old (-1988). My reasoning is that there seems to be a certain "break" between the types of catalog titles that get released before and after the 20 year barrier. As for the catalog titles of films less than ten years old, there's simply so many that there's no real need to track them and make comparisons.

The list will include titles already released and those officially announced with a street date.

But first, before the compiled lists, the raw numbers (as of 1/7/09).

Studio - Total # of releases - # of releases of 21+ years old catalog films - % of catalog films that are 21+ years old

Disney - 10 - 3 - 30%
Fox - 43 - 28 - 65%
Image - 4 - 4 - 100%
Lionsgate - 15 - 5 - 33%
MGM - 20 - 16 - 80%
MPI - 4 - 3 - 75%
Paramount/DreamWorks - 23 - 10 - 43%
Sony - 38 - 13 - 34%
Starz - 6 - 5 - 83%
Universal - 3 - 1 - 33%
Warner/New Line - 90 - 59 - 66%

As one can see, of the major studios, Fox and Warner are especially good about releasing true older catalog titles, with 65% and 66% being 21+ years old. Warner is especially noteworthy because they have released twice as many catalog titles as Fox, the second most prolific studio.

Sony releases a decent amount, but only 34% of the 21+ years titles. Universal still needs to get the ball rolling, while Disney, MGM and Paramount/DreamWorks simply need to release more in general, though MGM has an exceptionally high percentage in the 21+ years category.

The smaller distributors - Image, Lionsgate, MPI, and Starz - are doing rather well considering their small catalog libraries.

Wouldn't catalog by definition be anything that's not day-and-date? The title and explanation seem a little weird to me if there's an arbitrary (and quite large) cut-off point.

Technically, yes. But I explained my arbitrary reasoning.
