I hear ya, Harold.

I just watched Casino on my new set-up recently. While I would be all for a transfer, the current version isn't too bad really. I believe it is supposed to have that "contrasty," softer, grainy look.

Given Universal didn't give Apollo 13 a new 2:35 transfer for the upcoming DVD, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the same case here. I guess we'll see.

I noticed on thedigitalbits today that a full frame version is going to be put out on this as well. Correct me if I am wrong, but will that the the first Scorsese film on DVD that will be MARed? I'm thrilled that we are finally going to be getting an SE of Casino, but way to ruin a nice streak, Universal.

Great news. I'll gladly double dip. I might even treble dip for the French DTS version. I Double dipped on King Kong 1976. I have the R1 and the French 2 disc set that has an english DTS track wich sounds great, and 10 deleted scences. Sadly though there are forced subs, but you forget they are there after about 10 mins into the film.

Great news. I believe this is the last of Scorsese's gangster pictures waiting for the special edition treatment?

I think Casino was shot in Super 35, so at least the fool screen version won't be butchered quite as badly.

True, but the point is that Scorsese's OAR only streak on DVD will be blemished. Not the end of the world, but it would be nice to uphold.

That's interesting since Scorsese was a big part of the couple-minute-long featurette that TCM showed before they aired Lawrence of Arabia. It was a really good featurette, and should convert just about anyone to widescreen. But that's surprising that he'd let one of his films come out in fullscreen after being so staunchly against it on that featurette.

I know it's a CASINO thread, and I should just shaddup, but it still irks me that we are getting all these great DVDs for movies that are not-so-great, and the GOODFELLAS DVD, even the 2-disc "SE," is really second rate. I mean, you gotta admit it's not a pristine print of the film, and the extras are sort of lame. And you gotta admit that it's the best film MS has made in the last 15 years, if not the best film he's ever made (okay, RAGING BULL...). I mean, CASINO is I guess okay, but GOODFELLAS is... GOODFELLAS! And the DVD is second rate.

[/rant] Sorry for hijacking this thread. I'll bow out now.

Micah,

The transfer on the Goodfellas: SE is VERY good. What don't you like about it? For a 15-year-old movie I don't think you cannot expect much more. I'm not big on extras, but I did watch some of them and found them informing.

Again, I do not mean to hyjack this thread, so I will be brief. The DVD treatment of GOODFELLAS, one of the most important films of the last 25 years, is, IMO, abysmal. I am sure that there were even threads here about it. The scene when Paulie convinces "Hendry" to go to Florida is ridiculously bad, I think it's even worse than the previous "flipper" version.

I am just put out by stellar DVD releases of not-so-important movies. Especially since Scorsese is so "into" restoration and film quality. (In other words, even judging from other restored films on DVD, I CAN expect more from Scorsese. But maybe he doesn't like GOODFELLAS. Maybe GANGS OF NEW YORK is a more important film, I just haven't realized it yet.)

That's all. Serious. I feel bad about saying this in this thread. Everyone's going to hate me. It's all an issue for another day.

I was underwhelmed by the GoodFellas extras too. It wasn't that they were bad as much as they were short (for two discs anyway). I will say that I found the commentary by the real Henry fascinating though.

I hope the Casino disc has the same type of extras but just more stuff than GoodFellas had.

The Goodfellas transfer was from a new interpositive and went through the usual high standards of digital mastering at Warner. I think it is a very good transfer.

It looked fantastic on my 82" screen via a dvi link, maybe you need to treat yourself to a new dvd player or TV or get what you have got isf calibrated for $300 (or even diy via a $10 digital video essentials disc), it's amazing the difference it can make.

But as for the supplementals, they were short and far too brief.

Unless the video quality on the new release is a lot better, I am sticking with my original copy. This double dipping stuff is getting way out of control. I already double dipped on Goodfellas and Heat. And although this is one of my favorite movies ever, it will take a much better video transfer to get me to buy it. And with the current version already having pretty good pq and being an anamorphic transfer I don't think that it will be much of an improvement if any.
