It's impossible to compile a list like this without causing debate but damn, there's some stupid stuff on that list. I mean, "Come As You Are" by Nirvana is two spots BENEATH "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson? "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand is in the top 75? Britney Spears in the top 10?

Unless you read the title as "Greatest [Rock] Songs since 1980," it seems a fairly representative list. That doesn't mean I agree with the choices or their ranks, but looking at the list, it does seem to cover the territory. If you measure "greatest" by the degree to which the songs "rock," then I can understand your frustration.

I don't have a problem with non-rock. I have a problem with crap, and this list includes a whole bunch of it.

How was this list compiled?

Personally I feel you need to wait at least 10 years before a song can be considered for a greatest of all time list. Mind you most of the songs on that list that are older than 10 years don't deserve to be on any list with the word "greatest" in the title.

If they had called it "The 500 Greatest POP Songs Since 1980" then it would've made sense. As it stands, I can't support this list, despite the fact that I enjoy many of the songs on here.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...

One more note: Why did they choose their Ministry song to be "Work For Love"? Couldn't they have chosen "Jesus Built My Hot Rod" instead?

i suspect a large partition plastered with Billboards top100 from the last 20 years, and a few darts.

I don't think the list is that bad.

like a lot of people here, I am not a big fan of hip hop, but come on, just because you hate it doesn't mean it's had a major impact in the past 25 years.

Why is it that a list must be 99% pretentious indie rock to count? Since You've Been Gone is by far the most listenable song ever to come out of American Idol, I'd rather see that there than something but Clay Aikan.

Take Me Out was my #2 favorite single of 2004.

I hate Britney but come on... enough time has passed that apparently she isn't going anywhere. It's like people are still waiting for Madonna to just disapear, it isn't happening.

Lists like this are always debate fodder (that's their raison d'etre, IMO), but this one is just bizarre. I've never seen such a strange mix of music on the same list.

Did the article say anything about how they came up with the list?

Actually, her music isn't nearly as successful as it has been in the past and her public image is already at the "point of no return", her white-trash behavior and idiot husband have ruined her in the eyes of her fans. Even celebrities like Michael Jackson and Marlon Brando have found it nearly impossible to get past that negative public opinion in order to express their talents and Britney Spears is no Michael Jackson or Marlon Brando. If her career isn't at the end of the road, I don't know what is.

I think it's too early to say where her career will go, but I agree that right now, she's more famous as a celebrity than as a performer. For all Madonna's extracurriculars, she always delivered hits and made sure her music was prominent. Britney's done worse and worse with each successive album and her music has become superfluous.

Again, Madonna does teach us you shouldn't rule out an alleged flavor of the month, and since Brit's been a star for quite a while, it's premature to call her a hasbeen. However, I don't think she's going to maintain a longterm musical career ala Madonna - she'll be a celebrity curiosity and that's about it...
