Gee-whiz, Dan. Did you grow horns or find a halo?

What am I going to do with these two Tumults?

I will call Ga Power tomorrow and have a 3-phase line run to my house.

:D

Kyle, I think he is thinking along the lines of the AV3, AV5, AV8...(AV18), which are Adire drivers ;)

Audio is going to get interesting again for a little while. :) Someone want to do the math on how much air needs to be moved to produce the kind of levels Dan is talking about.

Something Wicked This Way Comes - Apocalypse. Spring 2003.

Now changed to CES 2004...hum.

I'm not sure how to calculate that. If there's no baffle or enclosure I don't know how to model the driver. Free air response is an odd thing. Hopefully someone more knowledgable than I will chime in.

So I would guess they figured out how to setup the suspension for one of those 70+mm motors Dan has told us about before. . . .

Dan, care to tell us anything about enclosures? Can I use it in my Tumult enclosure??????

"It's capable of reference levels at 20 Hz, when sitting on the floor - no box or baffle needed."

When & Where is CES?

what a tease!

CES is in Las Vegas, January 8-11.
Info Here

Nothing about a new product that is a huge woofer on the CES site for Adire, HOWEVER!

There is a 6.5" that is slated to be released.

Extremis 6
A new high-end 6.5" midwoofer with 13mm of one way linear throw, clean extension to 6 kHz, and high resolution, all in a compact and affordable package. Ideal for use in high-end audio monitors and compact subwoofers.

Info HERE

Maybe considered the biggest and baddest in the 6.5" section of subs.

Mike, there's one thing I've learned about this hobby/industry: Its just like the computer industry. If you wait for the next best thing you'll never buy and wont be able to enjoy the good products that already exist.

Also, even though things are shown at CES doesnt mean they are immediatly ready for production & distribution and it can be months before they are ready. I'm not saying that is necessarily the case here but is a general statement.

Im a invest once enjoy a million time type of person. I wont do or buy anything until im content that its quality/performance ratio is as close to 1 as possible.
Its kinda like the old heinz 57 commercials, good things come to those who wait

I think the Resonant Engineering XXX 18 might be at the top
The xxx18 sucks man
the Qts=0.59 ,so high needing huge enclosure to prevent peaking in midbass.Try modeling it.

theres plenty more quality transducers with proper specs and higher efficiency

Take the 18sound 18lw1400 for example,tune in mid 20s,97db efficiency...low Q.. only 250L box or so..;)

http://www.eighteensound.it/18LW1400.htm

for midbass go horn.for 20s you need to move alot of air.that pro 18as mentioned will be efficient And move substantial air.

if u want a low efficiency small box sub go ahead,Personaly id trade in small box for efficiency :)

for below 20s,u need specialist gear.(contrabass as already suggested)

my 2 cents

:)

michael-e,

Have you heard a 18XXX before? Experienced.

Just wondering if your only going off the numbers. I've never heard the 18XXX, but I've talked to and read about multiple people who have no problems below 20hz with it.

Just a little math for you. :)

Start with the tumult since I don't think to many people argure its ability to have deep extension and sound accurate. After all it uses the same XBL^2 technology as the XXX.

Adire Tumult 15"
34 (Xmax mm) * 749 (Sd cm^2) = 25466

RE XXX 18"
32*1210=38720

38720/25466=1.52

So that's 52% more linear displacement than a Tumult!

Or look at another 18" driver the Maelstorm from Adire.

Adire says it is "Capable of over 105 dB SPL anechoically at 20 Hz, Maelstrom can reach well beyond 115 dB SPL at 20 Hz, in-room, in a sealed box."

Notice sealed.

Adire Maelstorm 18"
13*1180=15340

38720/15340=2.52

So 152% more displacement than a driver that can do beyond 115db at 20hz in a SEALED BOX.

While, I can't comment on the sound I assure you that you don't need 'specialist gear' to do below 20hz.

Concerning peaking in the midbass. Who uses an 18" driver above 80hz? Even if the XXX did peak like crazy. Taking a closer look at XBL^2 you'll notice that it is more capable than most 18" drivers at handling higher frequency tones.

Let's take a look at the driver you suggested?
Remembering to really belt out the low notes you need to move lots of air and lots of air movement means lots of displacement.

18LW1400
9mm (Xmax) * 1225 (Sd) = 11025

38720/11025=3.51

In terms of sheer displacement these speakers aren't even in the same league. I'd buy a Maelstorm first.

The 18LW1400 would be tearing itself to pieces while the XXX would hardly be waking up.

Fs of 31hz? Xmax of 9mm? Gosh, if you want a big and efficient driver at least go with the Maelstrom. And I get a good deal MORE output from 30hz on down with the XXX in only a slightly larger box (6ft^3 vs 4ft^3) with the same power and pretty comparable numbers using it in a sealed box. Are you sure you're looking at things right?

Edit:

Damn Brian, you make my reply look lame. :)
