I would like to purchase a new LCD or plasma in the next 4 to 6 months.
I am just starting to look, though I am interested in about 50-inches, 1080p, high resolution, plenty of HDMI ports.

I understand that there are always new models that come out, though I am curious if there is anything new that has been announced that I should consider waiting for that will be out in the next 6-months to year?

I would say that if you require a flat panel, then there is nothing major looming in the 6-12 month window. There will be new models, but probably nothing breathtaking. OLED and the other flat panel technologies that are on the horizon are all more than 12 months from being affordable at the size you're talking about.

If you're willing to consider DLP, then there will likely be DLPs with a laser light source in the next 6-12 months.
