My thoughts on the DVD Release

I listened to the commentary for the pilot, but I was a little disappointed that Shaun Cassidy sometimes wanted to watch the show instead of commenting on it.

As for the problems some are getting on the DVDs, I think it might be the cause of older DVD players and/or the new copy protection scheme on newer DVDs (and how it was encoded into some newer DVDs). So far I have only experience problems with two or three new DVD releases this year (HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS and AMERICAN GOTHIC) on my Sony DVD player (and the computer DVD-ROM).

Gord,

Once I finish the series I'll go back
and listen to the pilot commentary now
that I know the "secret."

I am hoping to hear Cassidy elaborate
a little more on the character and the
intentions of Lucas Buck.

One of the things that really hooked me into watching Amercian Gothic was Gary Cole's performance. I was also really disappointed when they only went for one season. Ever since I saw this show, I still keep an eye out for Gary Cole in other roles mainly on the strength of seeing him in this. It's a shame that he hasn't broken through into anything other than supporting roles. As a fan of Babylon 5 as well, I was especially pleased when he was cast as the lead of Crusade, but look how long that lasted.

Im disappointed about the order of the episodes on DVD. Hopefully this may be rectified when they release it on Region 2.

I am continuing to move forward through
these American Gothic episodes. Ten
years later, the show is even better than
I had remembered it. This really is a
first-rate series mainly for the writing
and cast.

I have been using the episode guide that
was posted on TVSHOWSONDVD.COM, and
I'm really going crazy here going all over
the map changing discs and episode orders.

Thus far, I haven't really noticed the benefit
of doing all this disc juggling except
that starting with Rebirth there is a
brand new show opener.

I suppose I'll see the real benefit of using
the proper episode guide as I continue watching.
I do remember there was something odd concerning
Dr. Crowler's appearances when the show aired on
CBS, so I imagine that this new pecking order will
remedy that problem.

In the meantime, I am having a blast rewatching
this series. I have forgotten most of it, so this
is almost like watching it for the first time. As
I have stated, outside of some of the effects, the
show holds up quite well. In fact, this is so good
for me that I can't wait to get home from work just
to watch the next episode.

Just finished watching the entire set
last night.

I'm a bit disturbed that Universal put
the epides entirely in the wrong order,
but I suspect that they were only going
off of the airlist that was given to them.

While there is quite a bit of disc juggling
involved, I see why it is absolutely necessary
to watch these shows IN ORDER according to the
list that is referenced earlier in this thread.

Watching it in order as presented on the DVD
will only confuse viewers with a particular
character, Dr. Crowley.

Also, it is VERY important that the LAST episode
watched is the one as indicated on the posted
list. It's a very climatic episode that sort
of closes the entire series.

Otherwise, I was very happy to revisit this
series on DVD. It's just as good (if not better)
than it was 10 years ago.

Thanks for your comments, Ron - especially concerning the importance of the viewing order.

I loved this show when it aired. Picked up the set last week, but haven't had a chance to watch yet. Looking forward to it.

I am waiting for a region 2/4 release of this series.

I knew being a Universal R1 release would once again be a crappy quality release. Thats why I never bothered ordering it.

I have dual flippers dvd sets from other WB TV Shows, and the only problem I had was wonder woman S1, every other dual layer dvd was in perfect condition.

I think for many people, if they really want these Universal TV series, I think you are better off going for the R2/R4 version.

Now that I've finally purchased the set, I have a question for anyone who might know: do they use the original music in it? I could be wrong but I seem to remember the theme being slightly different than the one on the DVD (at least the pilot, which is the only one I've watched so far). And knowing Universal's penchant for replacing music, I have to wonder. Anybody remember the original music or have an original copy to compare it to?

Looks like an R2 release is imminent in the UK as some of the episodes have been passed by the BBFC - here's hoping they sort out the ordering of the episodes

I just finally ordered this set... will be the first time I seen several of the episodes. Can't wait to check them out. And yes I have the list to watch them in the correct order... thanks! :) I think that was one of the reasons I waited so long... not looking forward to juggling the discs to watch them in order.

Elena - no, the theme music is entirely the same as my original (UK) recordings. There are however at least two different versions of the theme (it evolves slightly after a few eps, with more choir vocals). Also, one of the early episodes has an entirely different opening title sequence (which Universal preserved on the DVD). :)

It's been several months since I watched this but I recall 3 or 4 variations on the opening.

Are there more deleted scenes in the R1 boxset than in the R2 boxset?

Re: The problems some people have been having with the discs. Were they audio problems, because I've had that problem with some of the DVDs and DVD boxsets I've bought in the last few months?

I think DVD18 issues can manifest in various ways. I know on my Lone Gunmen set the audio has issues on one episode, and those are stupid DVD18.
