Hmmm...
Well, let me be the first to congratulate you on your purchase.

With that 128GB SSD drive you are in for a real shock. I think
both you and your wife will be thanking all of us for talking you
into it.

Listen...

Want to give you a gift.

I won a Macbook Air case from Sena last week. They were
running a contest on Facebook and I was fortunate enough
to be a winner.

I'd like to give it to you and your wife.

Pretty deceiving. The image above gives the
impression that I actually won the product.

I am so sorry to have made an offer based on
bad perception of what I had won.

That's ok Ron. We appreciate the sentiment none the less.
Now here is the external drive we bought. Should we keep it and use it?

Tony,

Know what? When in doubt always check Amazon Reviews

Reviews don't look particularly great for this.

How much space do you really need?

You can get Dropbox (2GB of data) or Skydrive (5GB of data)
that allows you to share content across devices for free.

Let us know what you decide to do with that drive.

...and again, very sorry about the case. Really pissed off
that Sena didn't spell out what they were giving away. I was
so excited I won something on their Facebook contest and
in reality, it was 25% off their already overpriced (but great
quality) covers.

Yea pretty diceiving on that contest. Oh well no harm done here but I know you're not happy about it.
Looked At those reviews and looks like I'll be returning that to Costco.

I figured that Sam.i did like the idea of that drive sitting on a desk and not having a need to touch or movie it.
After we left the apple store I found that she bought a two year extension of apple care for $200. Wow, that was a surprise.

I have a 1TB Western Digital Passport USB 2/3 drive. I have three Macs backed up to it. You can get larger with the same form factor.

I concur with Dr. Posten and Dr. Tannehill.

This Western DIgital Drive with USB 3.0 connectivity is fine.

I just bought one myself. You'll need to format it in
Mac OS X Journal when you plug it in. If you don't know
how, we can post instructions. Takes less than 3 minutes.

If you want a really nice carrying case for the drive for
about $10 then you should also order this Case Logic product.

Does TimeMachine backup external drives?
Be sure to have a backup of any external drive you carry about...and also the ones that stay on the desk.

Dave,

I believe I am mostly correct on this...

Time Machine is not a reliable backup solution.

I used to dedicate a drive to it. However, it meant keeping
the drive active and when it kicked in, it took up processor
resources. Didn't help that it was a USB drive which was slower.

Time Machine is great for backing up daily activities. If you
accidentally delete a file, you can go back a few days when that
file still existed on your hard drive and retrieve it.

For total backup and restore, I use a dedicated external drive
and do backups using SuperDuper.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner. I'm sure SD is great but I've used CC for years and twice now when I have had very specific issues the developer himself has worked with me, for a considerable amount of his unpaid time, to resolve them. The first such time actually led to a pretty major new feature getting higher priority in their development cycle. Highly recommended.

Can't argue the merits of Copy Cloner. Have heard great things about it.

I have gotten personalized service from SuperDuper as well. The
developer's name is Dave and he's been very helpful.

BB has a deal of the day for that or a similar WD for $75. Also Costco has a Seagate 1TB for $70 I think.

I use TimeMachine, SuperDuper, and Backblaze -- on both my macs.
TimeMachine has been specifically helpful to me in recovering deleted apps, lost emails, and reverting documents. For the minor cost of a hard drive, I recommend it without hesitation. I've not done a system recovery with it.
But It's so easy to recover from SuperDuper, that I like that for rebuilding a machine or being sure I'm ready for a system upgrade. And the owner / tech support is super responsive; I've had a number of emails answered.
And Bacbkblaze...in case the apartment burns down or we're burgled :)
