Sometime in the Spring of 1980, I was invited by Sean Cunningham to a private screening of Friday the 13th, after which I shared my few cutting notes.
The film was a low-budget affair, and no one at that screening had an inkling regarding the cottage industry that the film would create.
In the intervening decades it has spawned a brace of kinsman. And some of those kinsman are a bit strange.
Afaik, there have been ten sequels, inclusive of Freddy vs. Jason, in which Freddy goes tusk to tusk with the lead from another series. There have been comic books, books, costumes, toys and at least one video game.
But enough background.
Paramount's new 4k UHD of the original seems nicely done. Grain appears generally unmolested, black levels are attractive, and everything seems to be in it's proper place. With the addition of Dolby Vision, some attributes appear just a bit on the hot side, but I'll not nitpick. It's a quality release.
Two variants are included, with branching on a single disc. Both run 95 minutes.
Image – 5 (Dolby Vision)
Audio – 5 (DTS-HD MA 5.1)
Pass / Fail – Pass
Plays nicely with projectors - Yes
Upgrade from Blu-ray - Yes
Makes use of and works well in 4k - 4
Highly Recommended
